SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA: Minnesota Rep Ilhan Omar has recently faced criticisms following the large-scale welfare fraud probe in Minnesota, reported to be as large as $1 billion in taxpayer funds.

Amid this, a rumor circulated online in late December claiming that Rep Ilhan Omar's net worth increased by tens of millions of dollars after she took office in 2019. But is there any truth to this? Let us find out below.

Claim: Ilhan Omar's net worth increase by more than $30M since 2019

An X user made a post that read, "JUST IN: It has been revealed Ilhan Omar's net worth grew from negative $45k in 2019 to $30 million this year — despite her salary being just $174k/year."

Many different X users also shared different iterations of the claim, and outlets like the New York Post and the Daily Mail also mentioned the same.

An X user wrote, "BREAKING: Ilhan Omar has submitted her latest financial disclosure. According to the filing, Omar and her husband, Tim Mynett, have a net worth ranging from $6 million to $30 million. The vast majority of the wealth comes from Mynett's two companies, a winery in California and a venture capital firm."

Unrated: Absence of definitive idea of Ilhan Omar's exact net worth

Ilhan Omar did have a negative net worth in 2019, as per her financial disclosure filing for that year. Her 2024 financial disclosure, which was filed in May 2025, listed millions in assets, Snopes reported.

However, those assets represented estimated valuations for businesses run in part by her husband, Timothy Mynett. Omar's financial reports did not list a single number for her assets and liabilities, but offered a wide estimated range for each listed monetary item, as is expected from filers, per the fact-checking outlet.

Hence, since there isn't a definitive idea of her exact net worth and the Facebook post did not specify whether it was referencing her individual or household net worth, the claim remains unrated.

Ilhan Omar's office calls the claim 'inaccurate'

Snopes reported that Omar's office called the claim 'inaccurate' and a 'right-wing smear campaign' in an emailed statement.

The statement mentioned, "If reporters actually read the financial disclosure, they would clearly see that the income that was received did not exceed $15,000. The value range listed for the assets reflects the full cost assessment of the businesses, in which her husband is one of several partners, and does not reflect her husband's individual share."

In September 2025, Omar addressed the allegations in a TikTok video where she pointed out that the income she and her husband actually received was minimal. She captioned the TikTok clip, 'Keep wishing millions into existence so I could pay off these student loans.'

The Minnesota rep estimated her overall household net worth as ranging between approximately $6 million and $30 million — but her individual net worth as anywhere between negative $82,000 and positive $65,000, as per the fact-checking outlet.
