Fact Check: Did Iran shoot down a US MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz?

IRAN, TEHRAN: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that it shot down an MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz.

The claim comes as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to rise amid the ongoing conflict. The IRGC’s claim has since spread online, with users questioning whether Iran actually intercepted and destroyed a US drone. Let's fact-check the claim.

Claim: Iran shot down a US MQ-1 drone 

Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported that the IRGC’s Aerospace Force used its integrated air defense system to intercept and destroy an advanced MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz on September 14, 2026.

An X post said, "In an official statement, the IRGC announced that its Aerospace Force, operating within Iran's integrated air defense network, intercepted and destroyed an advanced MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz moments ago."

Other Iranian outlets, including Mehr News and Al-Manar, also reported the claim.

Another X user wrote, “JUST IN: IRAN SHOOT DOWN ANOTHER US MQ-1 DRONE OVER THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ.” The post received mixed reactions, with some users questioning the claim and others sharing memes. 

The reports also come amid previous Iranian claims that it had shot down US drones.

Fact Check: The claim is unverified

The claim is unverified. IRNA’s English post used only a generic stock photo of an MQ-1 Predator.

It did not show wreckage, radar data, or video of the reported interception. Iranian officials also did not provide details about the drone’s operator, the exact location or time of the incident, or any recovered debris.

As of around 08:12 UTC on September 14, 2026, about two hours after the claim emerged, the US military and US Central Command had not publicly confirmed the incident.

No Western government or independent news agency had verified that Iran shot down the drone.

Iran has made similar claims about shooting down US MQ-1 and MQ-9 drones during the ongoing regional tensions.

US sources later confirmed some drone losses, while other Iranian claims remained unconfirmed or disputed.

The MQ-1 Predator is an older US-made drone that the US military has largely retired. Some partner countries and other operators still use the aircraft.

Iranian officials often describe drones as “American” or “enemy” without providing serial numbers or other clear evidence of their origin.

Therefore, there is not enough independent evidence to confirm that Iran destroyed an MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz.
