The post also linked Vance’s alleged decision to reports that his mentor, Peter Thiel, moved to Argentina. It further highlighted Thiel’s recent comments downplaying AI’s impact on jobs and hinted at bigger issues in US politics and the tech industry. Let's fact-check the claim.

Claim: JD Vance allegedly shut down a presidential exploratory committee

According to a post shared on X by @davegreenidge57, JD Vance had allegedly ended a presidential exploratory committee. The post stated, “JD Vance just ended his presidential exploratory committee.”

The post further claimed, "Now, his mentor, Peter Thiel, has fled the US for right-wing Argentina. But not before declaring that he might have overstated AI’s impact on society, particularly on employment."

At the time of writing, the viral post had received more than 1.5 million views within hours of being shared. It also generated thousands of reactions, including more than 43,000 likes and several comments from users questioning the authenticity of the claims.

Reacting to the post, one user wrote, “Fact check this. Any of it true or been sourced.”

Another user asked, “Did JD Vance end his presidential exploratory election committee?”

Meanwhile, one commenter dismissed the claims entirely, writing, “This post is a lie. JD Vance did not end a presidential exploratory committee.”

The claim that JD Vance ended a presidential exploratory committee is false and unsupported by any credible evidence. Vance currently serves as the US vice president in President Donald Trump’s administration and is not running for president. There is also no active presidential exploratory committee linked to him.

Vance did form an exploratory committee several years ago, around 2021–2022, when he was considering a run for the US Senate in Ohio. However, that committee was related to his Senate campaign and not a presidential bid. As of May 2026, no credible reports indicate that Vance recently ended any presidential exploratory committee.

The claims about Peter Thiel relocating to Argentina are partly true, though they have been exaggerated online. Reports indicate that Thiel purchased a historic mansion worth around $12 million in Buenos Aires’ upscale Palermo Chico/Barrio Parque neighborhood in April 2026. He has reportedly been spending time in the country and also met with Argentine President Javier Milei.

Argentina under Milei has adopted libertarian-leaning economic policies that have attracted interest from some tech and libertarian figures. Reports describe Thiel’s move as a temporary relocation or investment decision rather than a sudden “flight” from the United States. There is no evidence suggesting that Thiel fled the country in panic. Instead, the move appears consistent with his long-standing interest in global investments and alternative political and economic environments.
