Fact Check: Did JK Rowling invite Jeffrey Epstein to 'Harry Potter' event?
WASHINGTON, DC: In late January 2026, the Department of Justice (DOJ) published over 3 million additional pages in response to the Epstein Files Transparency Act. More than 2,000 videos and 180,000 images were included in the additional publication.
Following this, a rumor circulated online claiming that author JK Rowling invited disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein to 'Harry Potter' event. But is there any truth to this claim? Let us find out below.
Claim: JK Rowling invited Jeffrey Epstein to 'Harry Potter' event
JK Rowling has found herself in the middle of a controversy after her name appeared in documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. A rumor claimed the latest files released by the DOJ included an invitation to a Broadway show.
The document read, "Sonia Friedman. Colin Callender and J.K. Rowling invite you and a guest to the Official Broadway Opening of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I and II."

The invite, accessible in the DOJ library, was for Sunday, April 22, 2018. Interestingly, Epstein had already been convicted by the time. A screenshot of the invitation was also shared on X, and a similar post was shared on Reddit.
Fact check: False, JK Rowling debunks the claim
The claim made in the online posts is false, as it is misleading and has been directly refuted by JK Rowling herself. She did not personally invite Jeffrey Epstein to anything.
Rowling immediately responded on X: "This is beyond silly. Neither I, nor anybody on my team, ever met, communicated with, or invited Jeffrey Epstein to anything."
Moreover, additional context from reports and discussions indicated that this was a template or mass invitation email, and not a personal one. Tickets seem to have been obtained through a publicist named Peggy Siegel, who contacted the producer Colin Callender.

The invitation was likely a standard promotional courtesy extended broadly in the theater/Broadway world.
Furthermore, there is no evidence to prove Rowling ever met Epstein, communicated with him directly, or had any personal connection. A different document also mentioned someone asking Epstein for an introduction to Rowling, but that doesn't indicate that an actual relationship existed.
Additionally, no credible reports show JK Rowling knowingly targeted Epstein or had any deeper link. There's also no indication Epstein attended the event.
The claim seems to have originated from misinterpretations of the document wording, which lists her name alongside producers and is a part of the production's promotional invite, and spread in online discussions, often amplified by Rowling's critics.
