WASHINGTON, DC: Amid renewed political attention around President Donald Trump and ongoing debates over accountability and election integrity, an X post has gone viral claiming that over 1 million people have signed a petition calling for his impeachment once again.

The post refers to a campaign by the group Free Speech For People, which says it has gathered more than one million signatures under its “Impeach Trump Again” initiative and is urging Congress to begin impeachment proceedings during Trump’s current term. Let’s fact-check this claim.

Claim: Over a million people signed a petition called 'Impeach Trump Again'

According to posts already shared on X, Free Speech for People collected over 1 million signatures for its “Impeach Trump Again” petition.

One post states, “BREAKING: Over 1 Million Americans Just Signed a petition Called "Impeach Trump Again" Asking Congress to Begin Impeachment Proceedings Against President Trump.”

Follow-up posts on X further report that the nonprofit Free Speech for People launched the petition and later announced it had crossed the 1 million signature mark.

One post adds, “The group announced that it has gathered more than 1 million petition signatures for its "Impeach Trump Again" petition."

Another post on X quotes John Bonifaz, president of Free Speech For People: “The Constitution has a remedy for a corrupt, lawless president: impeachment,” said in a statement announcing the signatures.

The final post shared a link to the “Impeach Trump Again” website with “Full petition below,” and another directs users to freespeechforpeople.org under the headline “Over 1 Million People Sign Petition Calling for Impeachment Proceedings Against President Trump.”

Fact check: The claim is based on earlier reporting

The claim that Free Speech for People collected over 1 million signatures on its “Impeach Trump Again” petition is based on earlier reporting, not new information from April 2026.

The petition calls on Congress to begin impeachment proceedings against President Trump in his second term and cites a statement from John Bonifaz, the group’s president, who says the Constitution provides a remedy for a “corrupt, lawless president.”

Free Speech for People, a progressive constitutional advocacy group, launched the petition on Inauguration Day 2025 (January 20, 2025), in coordination with the Women’s March.

The group later announced that it had reached key milestones, including delivering nearly 1 million signatures to House leadership in July 2025 and publicly confirming that it crossed 1 million signatures in September 2025.

The X post circulates this earlier announcement as if it is new, using “BREAKING” language and reused promotional content. In reality, the milestone was achieved and publicized months earlier in mid-to-late 2025.

At the same time, while some lawmakers such as Al Green have introduced related impeachment efforts, these have not advanced to a full House vote or any Senate trial.

The petition also remains active online, and the group continues to promote it while citing survey data that it says shows public support for impeachment.
