WASHINGTON, DC: A report from The Wall Street Journal published on Wednesday, July 1, has ignited fresh speculation, alleging that SpaceX is working on an AI-enabled handheld device.

According to the report, an early version of the product has already been shown privately to a group of investors, triggering online chatter about a possible smartphone-style rival tied to Elon Musk’s growing focus on artificial intelligence.

This fact check reviews the credibility of the claim, weighing it against currently available evidence and Musk’s response.

Claim: SpaceX has built a prototype AI 'handset' and shown it to investors

According to the Wall Street Journal, SpaceX has developed a slim, phone-like prototype device powered by artificial intelligence.

The report, citing sources, claims the device runs on a proprietary operating system, incorporates AI capabilities from Musk’s xAI venture and uses Qualcomm chips.

It further suggests that the prototype was previewed to investors and stakeholders, hinting at a possible future consumer product.

Fact Check: Musk denies report as 'false'

Elon Musk has firmly rejected claims that he or SpaceX is developing a new AI-powered handheld device, publicly calling the report “utterly false” amid growing online discussion.

His response comes as speculation spread following a high-profile media report suggesting the existence of such a prototype.

This is not the first time Musk has addressed similar claims.

Earlier this year, when rumors surfaced about a potential SpaceX smartphone, he explicitly stated that the company was “not developing a phone,” reinforcing his current denial.

His consistent messaging across multiple instances adds weight to his pushback against the latest report.

While the Wall Street Journal article references a prototype-stage concept allegedly shown to a limited group of investors, there is no official confirmation from SpaceX, nor any publicly available documentation such as filings, product disclosures, or credible secondary reports that substantiate the existence of such a device.

Even within the report itself, the project is described as being in an extremely early phase, lacking a confirmed name, technical specifications, development roadmap, or any indication of a potential release timeline.

There is also no clarity on whether the concept has moved beyond internal experimentation, if it exists at all.

It is worth noting that Musk has occasionally spoken about the possibility of non-traditional hardware linked to Starlink, hinting at futuristic communication tools that could differ from conventional smartphones.

However, those remarks have been broad and speculative in nature, and do not align with the specific claim of a defined AI “handset” currently in development.

Taken together, the available evidence does not support the existence of the device as described.

At this stage, the claim remains unverified, with Musk’s direct denial standing in contrast to a report that lacks independent corroboration.
