WASHINGTON, DC: Robert De Niro has often been critical of President Donald Trump in the past for multiple reasons.

Recently, a claim circulated online claiming that De Niro said "f*** Trump" during the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on January 11, 2026. But is there any truth to this claim? Let us find out below.

Claim: Robert De Niro said 'f*** Trump' at 2026 Golden Globes

An X (formerly Twitter) account, Protect Kamala Harris, posted a clip when the 2026 Golden Globes were being held.

The actor could be heard saying "f*** Trump" during a live awards show speech, which received a standing ovation from the audience. He later followed it up with "it's no longer down with Trump, it's f*** Trump!"

The viral clip gathered more than 1.5 million views on X at the time of filing this story, and more than 8,000 people reshared the clip, further enhancing its reach.

The viral clip was further shared by other X accounts. An X user @allenanalysis shared the clip and wrote, "ROBERT DE NIRO AT THE GOLDEN GLOBES: 'I’m gonna say one thing: F*** Trump'. No euphemisms. No hedging. Straight to the point."

Another person shared the clip and captioned it, "OMG. Robert De Niro: I'm gonna say one thing : f**k Trump!' #GoldenGlobes. Is he saying the right thing?"

Fact Check: The clip is from 2018 Tony Awards

The claims made in the online posts are false, as even though the clip is authentic and De Niro did make that remark, it is from the 2018 Tony Awards and not from the 2026 Golden Globes.

At the time, CBS confirmed to Variety following the ceremony that the actor's comments were not planned and that De Niro improvised to bash the POTUS.

The network aired the 2018 Tony Awards on a 10-second delay and was able to censor De Niro’s comments on the live broadcast. CBS said in a statement, "Mr. De Niro’s comments were unscripted and unexpected."

Moreover, no reputable media houses covered any such story of De Niro swearing at Trump at the 2026 Golden Globes. Had De Niro made such remarks on the POTUS, several news outlets would have published stories.

Robert De Niro says Trump 'has no empathy'

During an appearance on MS NOW's 'The Weekend' in October 2025, De Niro said, "Trump does not understand anything about humanity, people. He has no empathy. I don’t know where — what he is, but he’s an alien, and he wants to hurt this country."

"It’s something deeply psychological in him, he wants to hurt people. He wants to hurt this country, doesn’t care," the 'Taxi Driver' actor added.

At the time, the actor had urged people to participate in the "No Kings" protest against Trump. He said on Instagram, "The original No Kings protest was 250 years ago. We’ve had two and a half centuries of democracy since then, often challenging, sometimes messy, always essential."

"And we fought in two world wars to preserve it. Now we have a would-be king who wants to take it away, King Donald I. F*** that!" De Niro added.
