WASHINGTON, DC: A viral social media post claimed that Senate Republicans staged a salad protest to mock Dr Anthony Fauci after he criticized Republican health policies, including food regulation cuts and vaccine conspiracy theories.

The post further alleged that several Republican senators later suffered diarrhea after eating the salads during the stunt.

The claim has spread widely across social media, leaving users to question whether the alleged protest and its reported aftermath actually occurred.

Claim: GOP senators ate salads to troll Dr Fauci over his health policy criticism

The rumor originated from an X user named Halfway Post, who claimed that several Senate Republicans became sick after eating salads for lunch to troll Dr Anthony Fauci

The post stated, "Several Senate Republicans are reportedly suffering from diarrhea today after they filmed themselves eating salads for lunch to troll Dr Fauci after he criticized Republican health policies including food regulation cuts and vaccine conspiracy theories."

The post appeared shortly after a real Senate hearing on July 29, 2026, during which Fauci repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment while facing intense questioning from Republican senators led by Rand Paul about the origins of COVID-19, vaccine policies, and his leadership during the pandemic.

The post also sparked reactions from users who appeared to treat the claim as genuine. One user commented, "It takes weeks for the diarrhea to manifest. It doesn't happen in a day. Unfortunately." Another wrote, "Probably because it was the first salad any of them has eaten in years."

Fact Check: False, no evidence to support the claim

The claim is false. No credible news reports, official records, or other reliable sources show that Senate Republicans suffered diarrhea, filmed themselves eating salads for lunch, or staged such a stunt to troll Dr Anthony Fauci on or around July 29, 2026.

The claim originated from @HalfwayPost, a self-described satire account whose bio states, "I don't report the facts, I improve them." The account regularly publishes fabricated and absurd stories for comedic effect, and this post followed a real Senate hearing involving Fauci while inventing the events it described.

The only real event connected to the claim was the July 29, 2026, Senate hearing, during which Fauci repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment while testifying before lawmakers.

No credible reports from the hearing or its aftermath mentioned any food-related protest, trolling involving salads, or health incidents affecting Republican senators.

During the hearing, Fauci also declined to answer questions about the origins of COVID-19, NIH funding, vaccine policies, and his decisions during the pandemic.

Before doing so, he delivered a brief opening statement in which he criticized Sen Rand Paul's "unhinged obsession."
