Claim: Obama Presidential Center was built with taxpayer money
In the video that went viral on X (formerly Twitter), Lara Trump criticized the Obama Presidential Center, saying, “Yeah, the whole thing from start to finish has kind of been a disaster, right? It’s ugly to look at, it’s over budget. The taxpayers are footing the bill, apparently, for parts of this, and then they had to open the ceremony.”
She also said, “With this performative morality and virtue signaling, when I think about what I would want a legacy as president to look like…”
Lara then praised President Donald Trump’s planned presidential library, saying, “I think about the Trump presidential library, which many people have probably seen videos of. It looks amazing.”
The Obama Presidential Center, which cost about $850 million to build, officially opened on June 19. Meanwhile, plans for Trump’s presidential library remain under development.
Reports indicate that the proposed project in Miami could include a high-rise complex and possibly a hotel. Unlike traditional presidential libraries managed by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the proposed Trump project is expected to rely on private foundation funding and involve the Trump Organization.
Fact Check: False, the Obama Presidential Center was funded through private donations
A review of the available evidence found no support for Lara Trump’s claim that taxpayers funded the Obama Presidential Center. Publicly available information shows that the approximately $850 million project was financed through private donations raised by the Obama Foundation.
The viral clip of Lara criticizing the center also received a community note stating that the Obama Presidential Center was funded entirely through private donations. The note explained that the Obama Foundation raised roughly $850 million to build the campus.
The Obama Foundation has repeatedly stated that it did not use taxpayer funds to construct the center. According to the foundation, “Since 2017, the Foundation has secured unprecedented private investment to build the campus, sustain our operations, and fuel our programming—all without the use of taxpayer dollars.”
The foundation also said that supporters from all 50 states and nearly 160 countries contributed to the project through individual, corporate, and foundation donations. It described the investment as a way to ensure that the center remains a long-term hub for leadership, education, and community engagement.
