KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI: You know how rumors can take on a life of their own? Well, that's exactly what’s happening with Taylor Swift and her NFL beau Travis Kelce.

A wild rumor has made a comeback, claiming that the pop superstar and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end vowed to pack their bags and leave the US if Donald Trump wins the 2024 election.

So, let’s break it down. How did this rumor even start? And, more importantly, is there any truth to it?

A night in Las Vegas that started it all

It all began on February 11, 2024, the night of the Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. All eyes were on the 6-foot-5, 34-year-old Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs' star player with his signature buzzcut and beard. But while Kelce was catching passes and making tackles, something else was happening off the field: The rumor mill started turning.

As the game heated up, fans on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, and TikTok began spreading the word that Kelce and his mega-famous girlfriend had allegedly made a bold declaration: they’re outta here if Trump wins the 2024 election.

The bizarre rumor was part of a bigger wave of conspiracies linked to Swift and the Super Bowl. When the Chiefs managed to win the game with a thrilling walk-off touchdown in overtime, some conspiracy theorists were ready to believe there was more at play than just good football.

As confetti rained down in Allegiant Stadium, some were convinced that everything had gone according to some mysterious grand plan.

But was there any truth to the rumors? Spoiler alert: not so much. According to Snopes, there’s zero evidence that Swift and Kelce ever said they’d leave the country if Trump won.

Conspiracy theories galore

Where did this all begin? Let’s rewind a bit. The seeds of this rumor were planted way back at the start of the NFL season when Swift and Kelce started dating publicly. With their relationship blossoming, the Kansas City Chiefs became even more of a media spectacle than they already were.

People couldn’t stop talking about the team—and not always for the right reasons. As the Chiefs dropped a few games toward the end of the season, some fans and commentators started questioning if they were as good as their record suggested.

But when the playoffs rolled around, the Chiefs silenced the doubters by battling their way to the Super Bowl. And that’s when things took a turn for the weird. Conspiracy theorists began to claim that the NFL was somehow rigged to ensure that Kelce—and by extension, Swift—would be front and center for a championship win.

One of the most outlandish ideas came from former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who speculated on X that Swift and Kelce would go so far as to endorse Joe Biden after the Super Bowl victory.

With the Chiefs’ dramatic Super Bowl win in the books, those who believed in the conspiracy theories were on high alert. Some feared that Swift and Kelce’s next move would be political. It didn’t take long for an X post to emerge, claiming that the couple had officially stated they would leave the US if Trump secured another term in office.

But did this really happen? According to Snopes, not at all. The fact-checking site pointed out that if Swift and Kelce had made such a bold statement, it would’ve been covered by every major news outlet, from sports blogs to national newspapers.

Snopes eventually rated the claim as “False,” shooting down the rumor that the couple had made any such declaration.

Taylor Swift endorses Kamala Harris

While Taylor Swift hasn’t publicly threatened to leave the country over politics, she has thrown her support behind Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election.

Taking to Instagram, Swift declared to her massive following of over 283 million people: "I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris  because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos."

Swift also commended Harris for choosing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, lauding him for championing LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive rights, and more.

"I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice," the Grammy-winning artist added. "Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. I’ll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story."
