WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump has issued a warning about Greenland’s strategic importance, saying that the US needs the island to counter Russian influence. He asserted that 'now is the time' to act, but European leaders criticized his remarks.

Recently, a rumor circulated online claiming that thousands of people signed a Danish petition to buy California from Donald Trump. But is there any truth to this? Let us find out below.

Claim: Thousands sign Danish petition to buy California from Trump

Many X users came up with a post claiming that thousands of people signed a Danish petition to buy California from Donald Trump. A user wrote, "More than 200,000 Danish citizens have signed a petition to buy California as a response to Trump’s attempt to take Greenland. They say they will provide Californians with 'rule of law, universal health care, fact-based politics, and a lifetime supply of Danish pastries."

Similarly, another X account posted, "BREAKING: More than 200,000 people in Denmark have signed a petition to buy California from the US."

"More than 280,000 Danes have signed a petition to buy California from the US. The petition promises to bring the Danish concept of 'hygge' to Hollywood, bike paths to Beverly Hills, and organic Danish sandwiches, 'smorrebrod' to every corner," wrote another X user.

Another post read, "A very funny Danish petition trolling Trump with a proposal to buy California has almost 300,000 signatures, and Americans are ready to make a deal."

Fact check: The Denmarkification petition is a satirical parody

The campaign, hosted on Denmarkification.com, is a satirical petition and imagines a world where Denmark purchases California, rebrands it 'New Denmark', and even renames Disneyland as 'Hans Christian Andersenland'.

Denmarkification petition pitches its California purchase as a parody, with language deliberately echoing some of the recent statements made by the POTUS about the acquisition of Greenland

The petition suggests Denmark should 'play the US at its own game', arguing the country needs 'more sunshine, palm trees and roller skates.'

The website also promises bike lanes in Beverly Hills, Danish hygge in Hollywood, and even Mickey Mouse in a Viking helmet - all while claiming the campaign is '100 percent real… in our dreams.'

Asking for donations, Denmarkfication.com jokes that they have a crowdfunding goal of $1 trillion. The website states, "That’s just 200,000 kroner from every Dane. Skip a few lattes, and you’re golden."
