WASHINGTON, DC: A rumor has been circulating on social media claiming to show a heated exchange between President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama over Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. The claim surfaced amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and ongoing discussions surrounding US-Iran relations.

The alleged exchange quickly gained traction online, with some users treating it as genuine while others questioned whether the remarks were authentic. Let us analyze and fact-check the claim.

According to the alleged exchange, Trump said, “Unlike Obama, we had a 'historic victory' in Iran.”

In response, Obama allegedly replied, “Yeah, absolute historic. You have been unable to open the Strait of Hormuz for the past 95 days, 18 hours, and 33 minutes.”

Although it remains unclear where the supposed exchange took place, the claim generated widespread discussion online. Many users appeared to believe the conversation was real, while others remained skeptical and sought evidence to verify its authenticity.

Fact Check: The viral exchange originated as a meme

The claim is false. No evidence suggests that Trump and Obama engaged in the alleged exchange.

Searches using keywords from the purported conversation, including “Unlike Obama, we had a historic victory” and references to being “unable to open the Strait of Hormuz,” did not produce any credible reports from major news organizations documenting such remarks.

A review of publicly available posts from both Trump and Obama also yielded no results matching the alleged argument.

Additionally, a fact check by Grok, X's AI assistant, stated, “The post is a satirical meme, not a literal news clip. It accurately captures partisan commentary on the 2026 US-Iran conflict but exaggerates for effect.”

The available evidence indicates that the viral exchange was created as satire rather than a record of an actual conversation between the two political figures.

Trump criticizes Obama's Iran nuclear deal

The meme emerged after Trump renewed his criticism of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a landmark agreement reached during the Obama administration.

On May 24, Trump used his Truth Social platform to attack the deal, arguing that it represented a major policy failure and contrasting it with his administration's approach toward Iran.

"One of the worst deals ever made by our Country was the Iran Nuclear Deal, put forth and signed into existence by Barack Hussein Obama and the rank amateurs of the Obama Administration," Trump wrote.

He further argued that the agreement enabled Iran to advance its nuclear ambitions and contrasted it with his current negotiations strategy.

"Not so with the transaction currently being negotiated with Iran by the Trump Administration — THE EXACT OPPOSITE, in fact!" Trump added.

While Trump's comments reignited debate over US policy toward Iran, there is no evidence that he and Obama exchanged the remarks featured in the viral social media post. The claim originated as a satirical meme and should not be interpreted as a genuine interaction between the two former presidents.
