Fact Check: Did Trump announce renaming Greenland to Green America?
WASHINGTON, DC: Following the announcement of the security agreement with Denmark and Greenland, a social media post claimed that President Donald Trump announced Greenland would be renamed ‘Green America '. The claim has sparked concerns and speculation, requiring a fact-check.
Claim: Donald Trump renamed Greenland to 'Green America'
The rumor spread in the form of a screenshot claiming to show a post by the president on his official Truth Social handle.
The alleged post reads, “Effective immediately, we will be renaming GREENLAND to Green America. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. Your handsome President DONALD J TRUMP.”
The claim has sparked renewed fear of security concerns between the United States and Greenland, as Trump had earlier floated the idea of acquiring the autonomous territory.
The concerns among social media users indicate that many believe the screenshot to be an authentic post by the president, while a few others called for a fact-check.
Fact Check: No such post exists on Donald Trump's social media
The claim, however, is false, as the screenshot is fake and fabricated and does not appear on any of the president’s social media handles.
A search on Trump's Truth Social handle for the text in the screenshot yielded no results.
A similar search on Trump’s commentary accounts on X that automatically archives all his social media posts also yielded no results.
A search on Google to check if Trump has posted it and then later deleted it returned no credible news media reports, which, if true, would not go unreported.
Also, the account called ‘Autism Capital,’ which posted the screenshot, is not a credible account and describes itself in the bio as a meme account.
Donald Trump claims permanent control over Greenland
The screenshot surfaced after Trump, on Friday, September 18, announced a first-of-its-kind security agreement with Denmark and Greenland that supposedly allows the US “permanent control over security, and all other needs” on the Arctic island.
“I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland," the 80-year-old wrote, "that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing all of our many US concerns.”
Trump said the agreement comes at “no cost” to the US and described it as an “Infinite Life’ Agreement, there is no end!”
