Fact Check: Did Trump post an image of himself dressed as a Mountie and arresting Carney?

WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump has regularly shared AI-generated images and memes on social media.

A supposed post showing him dressed as a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer arresting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has sparked attention online. The image circulated as the US and Canada entered a new stage of their trade dispute. But did Trump actually share the image?

Claim: Trump shared an image showing him arresting Mark Carney

An X post shared a supposed screenshot of a Truth Social post by President Trump. The post appeared to refer to NATO’s collective defense principle. The X user wrote on August 26, 2026, “Well Canada. Where do we go from here? Article 5?”

The alleged Trump post was captioned “Oh Canada!” It showed Trump wearing the red uniform of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, also known as the Mounties, while leading Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in handcuffs.

The image spread across X, Reddit, Instagram and Facebook. Former professional hockey player Theo Fleury also shared it. The image later appeared in several languages, including Chinese and Czech.

The image circulated after Canada ended tariff talks with the US on August 21, moving the two countries into a new stage of their trade dispute. 

Carney said the terms offered by Washington were “unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal.”

Trump has continued to criticize the US-Canada trade relationship on Truth Social and in public remarks. Some of his statements about the relationship have also contained inaccurate claims.

Fact Check: The claim is false

The claim is false. After US-Canada trade negotiations broke down, Trump shared several altered maps promoting his proposal to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”

Trump had also previously shared two altered images with the caption “Oh Canada!” while suggesting that Canada could become the 51st US state. 

However, he did not share that caption with an AI-generated image showing him arresting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

A search of live and archived versions of Trump’s Truth Social account found no matching post. 

Factbase, a database that tracks Trump’s public statements and social media activity, also does not list a post with the “Oh Canada!” caption alongside an image of Trump dressed as a Mountie.

The Hive Moderation AI-detection tool also assessed that the image showing Trump in an RCMP uniform was likely AI-generated.

Another post from a commentary account shared a similar image showing Trump wearing the same uniform and appearing to arrest Carney. That post was also debunked.

The post used the same “Oh Canada!” caption that was allegedly shared by Trump. However, there is no evidence that Trump posted the AI-generated image showing him arresting Carney.
