Fact Check: Did Trump post that Iran has been secretly powering US windmills?
WASHINGTON, DC: Amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, a rumor has gone viral on social media platforms claiming that President Donald Trump made an online post stating that Iran was pushing massive amounts of wind into the United States through a secret corridor, sparking speculation.
Let us analyze and fact-check the claim.
Claim: Trump made a post claiming Iran was sending wind into the US
The claim spread in the form of a screenshot showing an X post by Trump claiming that Iran was sending wind into the US to power windmills.
The alleged post stated, “Everybody said the windmills were clean. WRONG. I said from day one, where do you think the WIND comes from? Nobody wanted to talk about it."
"Now very smart people are telling me Iran has been pushing massive amounts of wind into our country through secret atmospheric corridors. TOTAL CONTROL."
"Why do you think the windmills only spin when it's windy? Think about it!!! Biden gave them access. Sad! And by the way the birds know. The birds are disappearing because they're afraid."
"Never happened before. Under me, we had beautiful calm air. Strong American air. Not Iranian wind. We're going to look into it VERY strongly. Maybe bar nighttime wind.”
The post spread on X, Facebook, and Threads, garnering millions of views. While some users mocked the post, others questioned its authenticity.
Fact Check: Trump never made such a post
The screenshot, however, is fake, as Trump never made such a post. A search of the president’s X account showed no such post.
A search of his Truth Social handle and commentary accounts that archive the president's posts on the platform also found no evidence of the alleged post.
A Google search for the text in the post yielded no relevant results from prominent news media outlets; instead, it led to social media posts sharing the screenshot.
Trump’s anti-wind energy stance fuels viral rumor
The screenshot spread amid reports of Trump’s opposition to wind energy. According to a Reuters report published earlier this month, the Trump administration halted US onshore wind development, citing national security concerns, and around 165 wind energy projects on private land had been delayed.
Trump has also repeatedly criticized wind turbines, and several of his claims about wind power have included false or misleading information about wind energy in the United States and abroad.
