WASHINGTON, DC: In a viral online post, a quote attributed to President Donald Trump warned that Kamala Harris’s presidency would lead to “bread lines” for Americans.

The claim circulated during the longest government shutdown, a period when Americans temporarily lost access to SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps. But how much of this story is actually true? Let’s find out.

Claim: Trump warns of 'bread lines' under Kamala Harris

Users on social media platforms like Instagram shared a video featuring an image of Trump juxtaposed with footage that allegedly showed people waiting in line for food in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2025.

The post stated, "Trump warned of 'bread lines' if Kamala won. Meanwhile, under his leadership, thousands of people in Cleveland are literally waiting in line for food assistance."

It attributed the situation to the current shutdown, emphasizing that it is not caused by "lazy people" or "bad choices," but rather because "wages are stagnant, housing is unaffordable, and the cost of living continues to rise." Another account on Threads shared the same video.

Fact Check: False, no evidence to back the viral claim

The alleged quote circulated online as part of broader speculation about what might happen under a Harris administration. However, there is no evidence that President Donald Trump ever publicly warned of “bread lines” if she were to win the presidency.

The alleged quote is believed to have surfaced around August 2024, during a period when inflation was a major topic of discussion ahead of the presidential election. This followed Harris unveiling her plan to curb "price gouging" to reduce grocery costs, a proposal that drew criticism from her opponents.

A review of Trump’s social media accounts, speeches, rallies, and debates leading up to the November 2024 election found no record of him making any statement about “bread lines,” although he did criticize Harris’ stance on the issue.

However, several prominent conservative Trump allies, pundits, media outlets, and satire websites explicitly mentioned “bread lines” in connection with Harris. It is possible that social media users either mistakenly attributed these comments to Trump or condensed general criticisms of Harris’ plan into a sound bite wrongly credited to him.

During a news conference on August 15, 2024, in Bedminster, New Jersey, Trump stated, "Now, Kamala is reportedly proposing communist price controls. She wants price controls and if they worked, I'd go along with it too, but they don't work."

Trump echoed these claims in a post on Truth Social later that same day. The Babylon Bee appeared to be the first satire site to mention Harris in connection with “bread lines,” in an article published on August 15, 2024.

On August 17, 2024, CNN commentator Scott Jennings stated during a broadcast, "If you like bread lines, product shortages, black markets, hoarding, if you want to recreate the happy economic conditions of 'The Walking Dead,' Kamala Harris has a plan for you."

He later echoed this sentiment in a post on X, sharing an alternate clip of himself on air repeating a nearly identical message. The post read, "If you like shortages, bread lines, hoarding, black markets and total economic anarchy, does Kamala Harris have a deal for you."

In summary, there is no evidence that Trump personally warned of “bread lines” resulting from Harris’ proposed policies. The rumor circulated during the longest government shutdown, a period when Americans temporarily lost access to SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps.
