Fact Check: Did Trump say POTUS should be impeached if Dow drops 1,000 points in 2 days in his old post?

Groups such as 'The Lincoln Project' and 'Occupy Democrats' shared the screenshot of what looked like a 2012 X post by Donald Trump across social media

WASHINGTON, DC: Ever since President Donald Trump took office in January 2025 for his second term, he has been in the news for making some stern decisions and signing executive orders that have divided people's opinions.

Meanwhile, many rumors and claims have also surfaced online and many of these have also been debunked. Many social media posts surfaced online claiming that Trump posted in 2012 saying the US president should be impeached if the Dow Jones dropped 1,000 points in 2 days. But is there any truth to this? Let us find out below.

Claim: Donald Trump once posted that a US president should be impeached if Dow drops 1,000 points in 2 days

A rumor circulated online in early March 2025 claiming that a screenshot showed Donald Trump once posting on X (formerly Twitter), "If the Dow drops 1,000 points in two days the President should be impeached immediately!"

The date and time mentioned in the screenshot are 12.01 pm on November 6, 2012.

Interestingly, several social media users shared the screenshot on Tuesday, March 4, when the US stock market had large losses, which included a two-day tumble of more than 1,000 points for the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Moreover, many anti-Trump groups such as 'The Lincoln Project' and 'Occupy Democrats' shared the supposed screenshot or text from the purported old tweet across different social media platforms.

False: Donald Trump did not post any such tweet in 2012

The claims made in the online rumor are completely false as Donald Trump did not post in 2012 that the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping 1,000 points in two days should result in a president's immediate impeachment, according to Snopes.

Moreover, the screenshot shared on X by several users was flagged as fake and the message read, "This image is altered. There is no evidence Trump posted that in 2012."

Furthermore, no credible news outlet covered any such news recently as the posts went viral across social media when the stock market saw huge losses on Tuesday.

Proof: The screenshot shared across social media is an altered image

According to Snopes, two searches were done on X by filtering the date range and looking for either "1000 points" or "1,000 points." The results showed that the oldest tweet mentioning the text from the fake Trump tweet dates back to October 11, 2018.

Notably, If Trump had made the post in 2012, it would have been shared by some users long before 2018, as per the fact-checking outlet.

Interestingly, on November 6, 2012, Trump made a post on X at 12.01 am where he wrote, "Yesterday Obama campaigned with JayZ & Springsteen while Hurricane Sandy victims across NY & NJ are still decimated by Sandy. Wrong!"

The fact-checking outlet mentioned that whoever created the fake Trump tweet about the Dow dropping 1,000 points used the genuine 2012 tweet about Jay-Z, Bruce Springsteen, and Superstorm Sandy and altered its text to display the fake message.

Furthermore, Trump's oldest post containing the words "impeach", "impeached", or "impeachment" was on June 4, 2014, per Snopes. That post read, "Are you allowed to impeach a president for gross incompetence?"
