BEIJING, CHINA: After President Donald Trump’s state visit to China, where he was accompanied by prominent tech executives including SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, an image began circulating widely online showing the three men together.

The viral image claimed to depict Trump, Musk, and Huang standing with raised fists in front of the Chinese Communist Party flag. But was the image authentic?

Claim: Viral image showed Trump, Musk, and Huang raising fists before CCP flag

“China first!” read one viral post that shared the image on X.

The image showed Trump, Musk, and Huang wearing matching dark suits and crimson ties, with their right fists raised in front of a red flag featuring a yellow hammer and sickle, the emblem of the ruling Communist Party of China. It also included a CCTV logo and a text chyron at the bottom.

The rumor emerged after Donald Trump departed Beijing on Friday afternoon local time, with no immediate indication that the United States and China had resolved ongoing tensions despite the visit signaling a temporary stabilization in relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

During the two-day visit, the leaders discussed issues including Iran, Taiwan, and trade through extensive bilateral meetings. The trip also featured several diplomatic gestures and marked the first Beijing meeting between the longtime rivals in nearly a decade.

Since Trump’s previous visit in 2017, he has significantly reshaped Washington’s global strategy, while Xi Jinping has tightened his hold on domestic politics and accelerated China’s push in advanced technology sectors.

Fact Check: Viral image showed multiple signs of AI manipulation

The image showing Trump, Musk, and Huang raising their fists in front of the CCP flag was fake. There is no authentic photograph of the three men posing together in that manner, and several inconsistencies indicated the image was likely generated using artificial intelligence.

One major issue was the matching outfits. The image showed all three men in identical dark suits and crimson ties. However, Getty Images photographs from the same Beijing visit showed Trump wearing different-colored ties on separate occasions, while Musk and Huang were not photographed wearing crimson ties. This suggested the clothing details in the viral image were inaccurate.

The image also contained visual distortions commonly associated with AI-generated content. Musk’s thumb appeared to blend unnaturally into his knuckle, while the folds on Trump’s and Huang’s right shirt sleeves looked nearly identical. Musk’s sleeve also appeared blurred beneath his jacket, further pointing to digital manipulation.

In addition, a translation of the Chinese chyron revealed the text read: “Evening News: Trump, Jensen Huang, Elon Musk sworn to join the Chinese Communist Party.” The exaggerated wording suggested the image may have been created as satire or intended as a joke rather than as a genuine news photograph.
