Fact Check: Did Zohran Mamdani push for a 20% pay raise for himself as NYC mayor?
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A viral claim circulating across social media alleges that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is seeking a nearly 20% pay raise for himself while advocating policies aimed at taxing wealthy New Yorkers.
The posts portray the proposed salary increase as evidence of hypocrisy, suggesting Mamdani personally pushed the measure through City Hall.

This is exactly what communists do.
Social media users claim Mayor Zohran Mamdani is pushing for a 20% raise for himself and other top New York City officials.
The claim gained traction after reports that the City Council was preparing to vote on legislation increasing salaries for the mayor, City Council members, borough presidents and other elected officials.
Many posts argue that Mamdani, who has championed progressive tax policies, is simultaneously seeking a substantial increase in his own pay.
Fact Check: False
The claim misrepresents both the origin of the proposed pay raise and Mamdani's position on it.
The legislation before the New York City Council follows recommendations issued in June 2026 by an independent compensation commission, which reviewed salaries for city officials who have not received a raise since 2016.
The commission recommended an 18.2% increase, not 20%, for the mayor, City Council members, borough presidents, the comptroller, and several other elected officials.
After the report was released, City Council Deputy Speaker Natasha Williams introduced legislation reflecting the commission's recommendations.
However, a spokesperson for Mamdani told Snopes that the mayor does not intend to accept the raise, even if the bill becomes law.
"I can confirm the mayor is committed to not taking a pay raise during his time in office," spokesperson Dora Pekec said.
City Council Speaker Julie Menin's office also told Snopes that she would decline the proposed salary increase if it is approved.
The viral claim appears to conflate a commission-recommended pay adjustment with a personal request by Mamdani.
There is no evidence that the mayor proposed, lobbied for or requested the increase. Instead, the recommendation originated from an independent panel, and the legislation was introduced by a member of the City Council.
