WASHINGTON, DC: The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids significantly ramped up during President Donald Trump's second term, which started in January 2025.

This aligns with Trump's campaign promises of large-scale deportations focused on removing individuals in the US illegally, with priority on those with criminal records.

Recently, a rumor circulated online claiming that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's wife owns a cleaning company where a Department of Labor investigation found that nearly 80% of employees used fake work papers. But is this really true? Let us find out below.

Claim: Chuck Schumer's wife owns cleaning business hiring immigrants in US illegally

In late March, social media posts claimed a Department of Labor investigation found that around 80% of employees at a cleaning business supposedly owned by Chuck Schumer's wife, Iris Weinshall, had fake work papers.

A Facebook post that shared the claim read, "Chuck Schumer's wife is being accused of hiring illegal immigrants with fake paperwork at her cleaning company, which reportedly employs around 1,100 workers."

The post added, "A labor investigation flagged a major portion of the workforce. Some are now questioning whether this is why Schumer pushes against deportations and ICE, because his own household allegedly benefited."

The rumor further spread on other social media platforms, such as X, YouTube, Instagram, and Threads.

An X post read, "Chuck Schumer’s wife caught red-handed running a massive illegal alien sweatshop — 880+ of her 1,100 maids exposed as illegals with fake papers!"

Fact Check: False, post originated as satire

The claims made in viral social media posts are false, as there was no credible evidence to prove that Chuck Schumer's wife ever owned a cleaning company that had been accused of hiring immigrants living in the US without legal status.

Notably, Weinshall works at the New York Public Library as its Chief Operating Officer and Treasurer, which is also her latest stop in a long career in New York public administration.

Interestingly, the claim originated from "America's Last Line of Defense," or ALLOD, a website and social media account that describes its output as humorous or satirical.

The original post by ALLOD had a caption, "Corruption is a family business", along with a photo of Schumer with the text, "Chuck Schumer's wife owns a cleaning service that employs 1,100 maids across New York."

The text further read, "After a raid on the company's HR office, the Department of Labor found that nearly 80 percent of them are illegals with fake papers. The question now becomes...how much did Chuckles know, and is he the one providing them with fake IDs?"

Moreover, a watermark in the bottom right corner of the image included a logo with a small "S" label, as well as the words, "Nothing on this page is real."
