Fact Check: Does the viral clip show Iranian troops targeting a US military helicopter?
TEHRAN: IRAN: Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East following renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran, a video began circulating on social media claiming to show Iranian soldiers firing a rocket at and destroying an American military helicopter.
The footage quickly gained traction online, prompting debate over its authenticity. Here is a closer look at the viral claim and what the available evidence shows.
Claim: Viral clip shows Iran attacking a US helicopter
The viral video appears to show Iranian soldiers aboard a ship firing a rocket launcher at a US military helicopter, which is then seen crashing. The clip has been widely shared by pro-Iranian accounts on X since June 10, attracting millions of views.
One widely shared post was accompanied by the caption: “Iran used a weapon worth one hundred and fifty dollars to shoot down a billion-dollar American military aircraft. For the first time, America had met its true adversary.”
The footage has also circulated on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
Comments under the posts suggest that many viewers believed the footage was genuine, particularly as tensions between Washington and Tehran have intensified in recent days.
However, other users questioned the video's authenticity, pointing to visual irregularities and suggesting that it may have been digitally created.
Fact Check: Viral helicopter video is AI generated
The claim is false. The viral video is not authentic and appears to have been generated using Artificial Intelligence.
A closer examination of the footage reveals several inconsistencies commonly associated with AI-generated content. Multiple individuals in the video display highly similar facial features and expressions, while certain movements and visual details appear unnatural.
The video was also analyzed using AI detection platforms including Hive Moderation and ZeroGPT. According to the results, Hive Moderation assessed the footage as 99.4% likely to be AI generated, while ZeroGPT indicated a 75% probability that the content was created using AI.
Additionally, searches for credible reports of an Iranian strike bringing down a US military helicopter yielded no evidence that such an incident occurred.
While there have been reports of a US helicopter crash near the Strait of Hormuz during patrol operations, there are no verified reports linking the crash to an Iranian attack or matching the events depicted in the viral video.
Based on the available evidence, the footage does not show a real military engagement and was likely created using AI tools.
Trump says more strikes against Iran are coming
President Donald Trump said on Thursday, June 11, that the United States would carry out another round of military strikes against Iran, claiming the attacks would be larger than previous operations.
“Yeah, there will be more bombing tonight,” Trump told Fox News during a telephone interview. “The bombs will be bigger, more powerful,” he added.
The comments came hours after Trump warned on Truth Social that Iran would be hit “VERY HARD TONIGHT” amid ongoing hostilities and stalled diplomatic efforts.
“At some point in the not too distant future, we will be taking Kharg Island, and other oil infrastructure points, and assume total control of their Oil and Gas Markets,” Trump wrote.
