Fact Check: Has GOP failed to flip a single seat since Trump’s 2024 win?
WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump won the 2024 Presidential election on November 5, 2024, by defeating Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris. He secured 312 electoral votes to Harris's 226, crossing the 270-vote threshold needed to win.
This made Trump the second President in US history, after Grover Cleveland, to win non-consecutive terms and the first Republican since George W Bush in 2004 to win the popular vote.
However, a rumor recently circulated online claiming that the GOP has failed to flip a single seat since President Trump’s 2024 election win and return to office in January 2025. But is there any truth to this? Let us find out below.
Claim: GOP failed to flip a single seat since Trump’s 2024 win
The assertion focuses narrowly on state legislative seat flips, and not congressional races, governorships, or party switches, comparing outcomes in special and off‑year elections held since Donald Trump’s election win.

Fact Check: True, media reports back the claim
Multiple news outlets and election trackers have reported on state legislative special and off‑year elections held since Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025.
A report on Gregory's win in Florida by NBC News stated that Democrats had flipped multiple Republican‑held state legislative seats during Trump’s second term, while Republicans had not flipped any seats during the same period.
Similarly, a March 12 report by Politico mentioned that "Democrats have flipped 28 Republican‑held state legislative seats… Republicans are at zero."
Moreover, a similar pattern is reflected in data compiled by The Downballot, which maintains a running tracker of state legislative special elections for the 2025–26 cycle that puts the total number of seats the Democrats have flipped at 30.
Interestingly, that tracker mentions Democratic gains only, with no Republican flips of Democratic‑held seats recorded as of late March 2026.
Notably, the figures apply only to state legislative seats, not US House or Senate races, governorships, or party switches. The figures also reflect a partial election cycle, covering special and off‑year elections instead of a full midterm.
