Amid ceasefire negotiations involving the US and Iran, a report emerged from the Middle East on Sunday claiming that Iranian President Mojtaba Khamenei had submitted his resignation.

According to a report by Iran International, the resignation is pending approval from Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. The outlet cited an anonymous source familiar with the matter.

The report claimed that Pezeshkian submitted his resignation on Sunday, arguing that "the president and the government have effectively been excluded from major and vital decision-making processes in the country, and that the vacuum created by this situation has enabled hardline factions within the IRGC to take control of affairs."

According to the sources cited in the report, the president sought to step down because he was allegedly "unable to run the government and carry out his legal responsibilities."

However, the Iranian government has publicly rejected the resignation claims.

Mehdi Tabatabaei, the Presidential Office Deputy Head of Communications, addressed the reports in a post on X, writing, "Pezeshkian would not back down from serving the Iranian people."

IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News Agency also cited an informed government source as saying that Pezeshkian remains in his position as president and has not resigned.

Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency likewise reported that Iranian officials had denied the resignation claim, indicating that the president continues to serve in office.

Based on the available information, there is no official confirmation that Pezeshkian has resigned. The claim currently rests on an anonymously sourced report that has been publicly disputed by Iranian government representatives and state-linked media outlets.

As talks between the US and Iran continue during the ongoing 60-day ceasefire, President Donald Trump said Iran has agreed to stricter nuclear restrictions than those previously discussed during negotiations with Washington.

Speaking during an interview with his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, on her Fox show on Saturday, May 30, Trump claimed Tehran had agreed not only to refrain from developing a nuclear weapon but also from obtaining one through any outside source.

"So now it says, 'We will not develop or in any way purchase a military weapon.' That's a big difference," Trump said. "So we're getting what we want slowly."

Trump also warned that the US remains prepared to return to military action if diplomatic efforts ultimately fail.
