WASHINGTON, DC: An X post from an anti-Trump account emphasized Trump’s claim that he has secured $20 trillion in foreign investment.

Since returning to office, Trump has repeatedly increased the amount he says his administration has secured, from $17 trillion or $18 trillion to more than $19 trillion and now $20 trillion.

He has pointed to deals involving countries such as Japan, the UAE and Qatar. Let’s fact-check it.

Claim: Trump says he has secured $20 trillion in foreign investment in the US

An X user named @MAGALieTracker shared a clip from Trump’s speech at a roundtable on American mining at the US Department of State in Washington, DC, on Friday, August 7, 2026.

During the event, Trump referred to about $19.2 trillion in investments and said the total would soon exceed $20 trillion.

The X post criticized Trump’s claim, saying, "Trump lies that he has secured $20 TRILLION of foreign investment in the United States. This is 60% of America’s total GDP. In other words, this is total bullshit. He’s lying."

The video showed Trump discussing the investment figure and comparing it with the previous administration.

He said, "We have in a short period of time, a year and a half, and it’s the numbers are for the first 12 months actually, but figure a year and a half. We have 19.2 trillion dollars being invested."

Trump then added, "The previous administration had much less than 1 trillion in four years. We have 19.2 in actually 12 months, but we’ll add something to it. So, it’s now going to be over 20 trillion dollars. And by the way, no country ever in history has done anywhere near that number.”

Fact Check: False, White House's figures are much lower

The claim is false. The White House’s own figures are much lower than the $20 trillion Trump cited. Its public lists of major investment announcements put the total at roughly $9 trillion to $11 trillion, depending on the list and date.

The White House figures also combine different types of commitments. They include large, multiyear investments by US companies, as well as pledges from foreign governments and companies. Some of these pledges cover future projects, broader trade goals or investments that may not happen as announced.

Independent reviews have also found that parts of the White House list include vague promises, previously announced projects and trade-related targets. Some of these figures do not represent new investment in the United States.

Trump has repeatedly cited figures ranging from $18 trillion to more than $21 trillion. However, even the White House’s lower total includes many proposed and multiyear commitments rather than money already invested in the US. The amount of investment actually completed is far smaller than the figure Trump claims.
