WASHINGTON, DC: As the US-Iran conflict escalates day by day, a viral X post makes a shocking claim that Barack Obama is leading a secret NATO effort to undermine US peace talks.

The post alleges that the former president has established a back channel with fellow left-leaning and global leaders within NATO countries to sabotage ongoing negotiations between the Trump administration and Iran. Let’s fact-check the original post.

Claim: Barack Obama is secretly leading a NATO effort to undermine US peace talks with Iran

A viral X post shared from the Joshua Hall account claimed that Barack Obama is leading a secret NATO effort to undermine US peace talks with Iran and provide financial support to the country.

The post alleged, "DISGRACED former President Barack Obama has allegedly established a back channel with fellow leftist and globalist leaders of NATO countries to SABOTAGE the ongoing peace talks between the Trump administration and Iran by providing SECRET NATO SUPPORT to the world's leading state sponsor of terror in the form of BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN CASH being discreetly flown into the country by our so-called "allies" to provide funding to the regime that chants "Death to America."

It also stated that these alleged actions were intended to encourage Iran to ignore US demands regarding the Strait of Hormuz and to continue restricting access to increase pressure on the United States. The post added that such actions were aimed at weakening Trump’s political position by contributing to higher energy prices and ongoing conflict.

The message concluded by saying, "They are siding with the terrorists. We aren't just at war with Iran... We are at war with our purported friends. With friends like theses TRAITORS, who needs enemies? As usual, President Trump was right… It is time to get the HELL OUT OF NATO AND ARREST OBAMA NOW!"

Fact Check: No evidence has been found that Barack Obama is involved in a secret NATO effort

The claim about Barack Obama made in the X post is unsubstantiated and appears to be false or a highly exaggerated conspiracy theory with no credible evidence.

The post uses strong and inflammatory language such as “DISGRACED,” “DESPICABLE TERRORISTS,” and “TRAITORS,” and includes two images, one showing Obama at a past international summit with world leaders and flags, and another of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. However, these are generic or archival images and do not provide any proof of the alleged activities.

There is no reporting from major news organizations that supports the claim that Obama is involved in a secret NATO-backed effort to send cash to Iran or influence negotiations against the Trump administration. Searches of public reporting from 2025–2026 also show no verifiable evidence for these allegations.

Obama has been out of office since 2017. While former officials from his administration may occasionally comment on foreign policy issues, there is no evidence that he is directing covert NATO operations, financial transfers, or military advice to Iran.

No leaked documents, intelligence reports, or official records support these claims. As a result, the post should be treated as unverified misinformation or disinformation rather than legitimate breaking news. Real US-Iran relations involve ongoing diplomatic tensions and negotiations over issues such as nuclear policy, sanctions, and regional security, but there is no evidence of any secret Obama-led NATO operation against the United States.
