WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump addressed the nation during the America 250 celebration on the National Mall in Washington, DC, in an event featuring patriotic performances, military flyovers, and a fireworks display.

Trump's Fourth of July speech, originally scheduled for around 9.45 pm ET, was delayed until about 11 pm after severe thunderstorms forced officials to evacuate the National Mall.

When Trump took the stage, he opened by highlighting the event's crowd size, claiming that 375,000 people had attended before the weather-related evacuation. Is the claim true?

Claim: 375,000 people were present on the National Mall before evacuation

A 34-second video clip of President Donald Trump's opening remarks at the America 250 celebration has quickly gone viral on social media. In the clip, the 80-year-old compared the crowd size before and after the evacuation due to thunderstorms.

Trump began by saying, "We're here, we're here, we're here. There's no way we can be deterred." He then claimed, "They estimated they had 375,000 people before everybody had to leave."

Referring to the crowd that remained after the evacuation, he added, "And they now have 150,000 people. It's the craziest thing anyone's ever seen."

Trump went on to thank those who stayed despite the weather, saying, "I want to just thank you. I feel so badly about some people, they left and they couldn't get back. But you're very special people, and we have a very special country. Thank you very much."

The clip spread rapidly online within hours of the speech, prompting debate over the accuracy of Trump's crowd estimates. While many supporters praised the turnout, others questioned and mocked the figures he cited. Here's what the evidence shows.

Fact Check: No evidence to support Donald Trump's assertion

The claim is false. There is no independent evidence verifying President Donald Trump's assertion that 375,000 people attended the America 250 celebration before the weather-related evacuation or that 150,000 remained afterward. News organizations covering the event did not confirm those figures, and no official crowd count has been released.

Reports on earlier America 250 events, including the Great American State Fair, described attendance as lower than some of Trump's public estimates, with organizers and officials expressing concerns about turnout because of extreme heat and logistical challenges.

During the 2026 Fourth of July celebration, severe thunderstorms forced officials to evacuate the National Mall before Trump resumed his speech later in the evening. Available photos, videos, and eyewitness accounts do not independently support the crowd figures Trump cited.

The National Mall is capable of accommodating large crowds. Event permits for major Independence Day celebrations are often issued for gatherings of around 250,000 people, while estimates of the Mall's maximum capacity range from roughly 450,000 to 1 million, depending on crowd density, event layout, and the amount of usable space.

However, those figures represent the venue's potential capacity and should not be interpreted as evidence of the actual attendance at the July 4, 2026, event.
