Fact Check: Is Trump's claim about grocery prices are down true?
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump will complete the first year of his second run as the POTUS in January 2026, and a few months after taking office, he had claimed to bring the prices down.
Recently, a clip of the President went viral where he said grocery prices have started to go 'rapidly' down. But is there any truth to his statement? Let us find out below.
Claim: Trump says grocery prices are down
On Wednesday, January 14, a clip was shared by Journalist Aaron Rupar where President Trump was heard saying, "Grocery prices are starting to go rapidly down. Rent is down. Airfares are down. Hotel rates are down. Cell phone prices are down."

The clip was further shared by different X users. The President made similar claims in October 2025 in the Oval Office, where he said gas, grocery, and energy prices are 'way down'.

Similarly, in November 2025, he said, "Prices are coming down very substantially on groceries and things… A Thanksgiving meal and surroundings are lower than it was under Biden."
Fact Check: Report shows Grocery prices rose 0.7 percent last December
The claim made by President Trump contradicts reality, as Axios reported that grocery prices (or 'food at home', as per the Bureau of Labor Statistics) rose by 0.7 percent in December 2025, the largest monthly gain since the peak inflation period in August 2022.
Moreover, the outlet also reported that food inflation was also evident at restaurants, as costs for dining out (or 'food away from home') spiked by a similar amount, the largest monthly gain in three years.
The report further mentioned grocery prices were up roughly 2.4 percent in December compared to the prior year. However, that masks double-digit price increases for a slew of household staples over the last 12 months, including coffee (+20 percent), beef (+16 percent), and candy (+10 percent).
Trump made similar claim last November
Speaking to reporters at Palm Beach International Airport before jetting off to Joint Base Andrews in November 2025, Donald Trump said prices are "already at a much lower level than they were with the last administration," and that "from an economic standpoint, our prices are coming down very substantially on groceries and things."

The POTUS said he and his team have been working behind the scenes. He added, "We worked on it this weekend, and you're going to see some of the items that were a little bit higher, they were lower than the last administration but a little bit higher, we're going to have some little price reductions and, in some cases, some pretty good ones."
He also said at the time, "The affordability is much, much better with us. And again, I go to Walmart and other companies and, in every case, it's about 25 percent. A Thanksgiving meal and surroundings are 25 percent lower than it was under the Biden administration."
