Fact Check: Is US Marines set to launch ground invasion in Iran?
WASHINGTON, DC: The Department of Defense has decided to send more Marines and Navy ships to the Middle East as tensions emerge near the Strait of Hormuz.
US officials stated that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth approved a request from CENTCOM to send part of an amphibious ready group, along with a Marine unit, to the region.
Following this, a rumor circulated online claiming that the move by the Defense Department means that the United States is preparing to invade Iran. But is there any truth to this? Let us find out below.
Claim: US Marines set to launch ground invasion in Iran
Amid the recent update, an X user posted, "US in full panic. Pentagon sending in 2500 marines to invade Iran, calling them an 'expeditionary unit', in other words, send them out and see if they die."

Things are in dire straits. Get it? Get it?
Similarly, another X account mentioned, "Trump said the war is basically over. The Marines got different orders", whereas one wrote, "Fantastic, a land invasion can’t be far off."
Reportedly, the unit being sent is the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is normally based in Japan under the US Indo-Pacific Command, and has now been ordered to move toward the Middle East.
As per officials, the MEU provides a wide range of military capabilities that commanders can use if needed, and not just ground combat. The unit also includes advanced aircraft, such as a squadron of F-35 Lightning II fighter jets and a squadron of Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey aircraft.
Fact Check: False, claim is speculative based on current deployments
The viral claim that US Marines are set to launch a ground invasion in Iran is not accurate, as it's speculative and exaggerated based on current deployments.
The rumor circulated after the US decided to deploy approximately 2,200–2,500 Marines to the Middle East. This force is en route, or positioning near the region, amid the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran.
Moreover, the deployment provides amphibious and rapid response capabilities, including potential for raids, securing islands in the Strait of Hormuz, embassy evacuations, or maritime security operations.
Credible news reports stated that the move is precautionary and enhances options, and is not a confirmation of imminent ground invasion. No official US sources, such as the Pentagon, the White House, or CENTCOM, announced or confirmed plans for a ground invasion of mainland Iran.
Meanwhile, officials have not ruled out limited ground operations, but a large-scale invasion remains unconfirmed and highly escalatory.
Moreover, President Donald Trump and officials have kept 'all options on the table,' but emphasized no current plan for major ground troops.
