Fact Check: Is video showing Rachel Maddow crying about White House renovations real?
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump's decision to renovate the White House has sparked criticism from several quarters, with some accusing him of misusing taxpayer funds.
Amid this, a rumor spread online claiming that a video showed MSNBC host Rachel Maddow reacting emotionally to the demolition of the White House East Wing. But is the video real? Let’s find out.
Claim: Video shows Rachel Maddow crying about White House renovations
On October 24, 2025, Threads displayed a trending topic that read, “Rachel Maddow reacts emotionally to White House renovation plans.”
The topic featured an image of Maddow on 'The Rachel Maddow Show', appearing emotional about the demolition of the East Wing.
Users clicking on the topic found multiple posts sharing a video that allegedly showed Maddow holding back tears. One caption read, “When Rachel Maddow finds out her employer Comcast funded the destruction of the White House."
The clip also displayed a list of alleged donors for Trump’s new ballroom project and a chyron that said, “Maddow Finds Out Comcast Destroyed White House.” The same video appeared on Facebook and LinkedIn soon after.
Fact Check: Viral clip was digitally altered by an X user
The claims circulating with the video are false. Rachel Maddow did not react emotionally to the White House East Wing demolition.
During her October 20 episode, she only mentioned the start of the demolition and did not cry or appear emotional.
The viral clip was digitally edited by an X user who altered an older video, added graphics of donors, and changed the chyron. Shortly after posting it, the same user clarified in a reply, “This is a meme (obviously).”.
The misleading Threads caption combined with the altered meme video gave rise to the false claim.
In reality, the original clip showing Maddow tearing up was taken from a June 19, 2018, episode of 'The Rachel Maddow Show' that had nothing to do with the White House renovations.
East Wing to be replaced by 90,000-square-foot ballroom
Construction of a 90,000-square-foot ballroom began on Monday at the White House. The $250 million project is fully funded by private donors.
The ballroom will seat up to 999 guests—far more than the 200-seat East Room, The Guardian reported. The East Wing is being demolished to make space for the new structure.
President Trump aims to finish the project before the end of his term in 2029. The ballroom marks the first major White House structural addition since the Truman Balcony in 1948, according to The Independent.
