IRAN, TEHRAN: A viral rumor is making rounds on social media claiming that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) recovered a US soldier’s skull from the wreckage of a downed C-130 involved in a rescue mission for a missing American airman in Iran. The claim comes in the wake of US officials confirming that the C-130 aircraft was deliberately destroyed by American forces after becoming stuck during the rescue operation, an operation that ultimately succeeded.

Claim: US soldier’s skull found in a downed C-130 wreckage

Amid ongoing waves of propaganda making unverified claims about US casualties, a rumor about a US soldier’s skull recently surfaced on X (formerly Twitter) from a user named @_globeobserver. The post read: “BREAKING: U.S. soldier’s skull found among the wreckage of one of the downed C-130s,” and cited the IRGC Public Relations as its source. The tweet included an image of charred debris with a red circle highlighting what was claimed to be human remains.

Within a day, the post went viral, garnering thousands of views, comments, and over 2,000 likes. Many users immediately questioned its authenticity. One asked, “Is this true?” while another suggested a different explanation: “Looks more like a burned car. Rear center console gives it away. Still crazy though.”

Another commenter added, “It’s not a real human skull—it’s twisted, charred metal from wreckage, likely misinterpreted as remains for propaganda. It’s an Iranian car.”

The incident illustrates how quickly unverified images and claims can spread online, especially amid tense geopolitical narratives.

Fact Check: False, CENTOM says no personnel were killed

A Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules cargo plane of the U.S. Air Force takes off from Ramstein Air Base on April 02, 2026 in Ramstein-Miesenbach, Germany. Ramstein Air Base is an installation of the U.S. Air Force and is a major transit hub for U.S. troops and materiel deployed to the Middle East. While U.S. President Donald Trump has said the current U.S.-Israeli war with Iran should cease in a matter of weeks, the number of U.S. ground troops being sent to the region has recently increased significantly. The IRGC has shared images of wreckage from destroyed US aircraft, including C-130s, claiming debris and possible remains were found. However, there is no confirmed evidence that a US soldier’s skull or any human remains were actually recovered.

X influencer Mario Nawfal wrote, "Iran claims that the skull of a U.S. servicemember was found in the wreckage of a destroyed C-130. U.S. CENTCOM says no personnel were killed and confirms the aircraft were deliberately destroyed by U.S. forces. Tehran also claims it shot them down, contradicting the U.S. version of events. No confirmation yet. Take any Iranian claims with a massive grain of salt, especially with the ongoing propaganda war."

US officials have not commented on the specific image. Separately, US President Donald Trump said an American service member who went missing after a reported F-15E jet downing in Iran had been rescued.

In short, the claim comes from Iranian sources and social media, but there is no independent verification that a US soldier’s skull was found.
