Claim: Dolly Parton's death is a hoax

On August 25, several social media users claimed that Dolly Parton was still alive and that reports of her death were a hoax. One Reddit user questioned the reports, pointing to Parton’s recent virtual appearance for her new exhibition at Dollywood. 

The user wrote, “She looked to be doing ok when she made a virtual appearance for her new exhibition at Dollywood! And back in May she said that her health was improving when she had to cancel her Vegas concerts!”

The user also referred to Parton’s earlier comments about her health, writing, “And even back in October just last year she said she was not dying and for us not to worry about her! And I swear to God, she PROMISED us that she would continue to work and make more public appearances when she could! And what about her musical coming out?”

The Reddit user further pointed to Parton’s appearance at Dollywood, saying, “Also, she looked SO WELL at her keynote appearance at Dollywood! She said that she was building herself back up after going through the major loss of her husband!” The user added that they had hoped to see more appearances from Parton at Dollywood.

Based on these earlier updates, the user said they hoped the death report was not real, writing, “I am so concerned about her, and I am holding on to hope that this ‘death’ of hers is just a damn hoax!” The post ended with the user strongly rejecting the possibility of Parton’s death and expressing hope that she would live for many more years.

The claim is false. Dolly Parton’s death announcement was not a hoax. The news was confirmed by her family and shared through her official social media accounts. 

Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced her death in a video posted on Parton’s official Instagram account on behalf of the Parton family.

Parton’s official X account also confirmed her death, stating, “Global icon and humanitarian, Dolly Parton, known to the world as a beloved singer, songwriter, philanthropist, actress, playwright, and author died peacefully today in Nashville, Tennessee. She was 80 years old.”

The family’s official obituary also paid tribute to Parton’s decades-long career and legacy. It said, “A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family.”

The obituary added that her legacy of “love, compassion, and resilience” would continue through her music and philanthropic work.
