LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Golfer Rory McIlroy has decided to part ways with wife Erica Stoll.

One of the most recognized sportspersons, McIlroy, filed for divorce just a week before the prestigious PGA Championship.

“Court records show the 35-year-old golfer submitted the documents in Florida on Monday... some seven years after the couple first tied the knot,” per TMZ Sports.

What led to Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll's split?

The couple started dating in 2014, months after McIlroy separated from his fiance tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. Stoll used to work as a PGA transport official.

“Erica that week was always the one that was checking us in and out. She was there at transportation, so she was always in the car park over there (by the clubhouse),” McIlroy said in a 2019 interview.

“But yeah, it’s still cool to look around and think about that week, and obviously everything that’s happened since then. It’s pretty cool,” he added, per NBC Sports.

McIlroy and Stoll exchanged vows at Ashford Castle in Ireland in 2017.

The wedding ceremony was attended by some major stars, including Steve Wonder, Ed Sheeran, and Chris Martin of Coldplay band, according to E! News.

The 4-time major champion had Stoll by her side during last year’s Ryder Cup in Italy.

TMZ stated that “the reasons for the breakup were not made immediately available.”

The couple share a three-year-old daughter, Poppy, from their seven years of marriage.
