Fauci’s lawyers raise a legal war chest and Rand Paul isn’t buying it
WASHINGTON, DC: Dr Anthony Fauci’s lawyers have created a legal defense fund to cover his mounting legal expenses, saying the retired former COVID-19 adviser is facing an “unprecedented legal barrage” and needs a robust defense.
The fund comes as Fauci faces continued scrutiny from Congress and state officials over his role during the COVID-19 pandemic, including questions surrounding research funding, his statements about the origins of the virus and his responses to congressional inquiries.
Fauci’s lawyers insist he has done nothing wrong and will not personally receive money from the fund.
Fauci’s lawyers prepare legal defense
The fund was established specifically to help pay the costs of Fauci’s ongoing legal representation, according to its website. Contributions are final and non-refundable, while an independent trustee will oversee the money.
David Schertler, one of Fauci’s attorneys, said the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director is facing an unusually large amount of legal pressure for a retired public official.
“Dr Fauci has not done anything wrong,” Schertler said, describing the actions against him as “unfounded and frivolous.”
Fauci’s lawyers said neither he nor his legal team controls the fund. Attorneys’ invoices will be reviewed independently, and any money left after the litigation ends will be donated to charity.
Rand Paul turns fund into political fight
The new fund immediately became a target for Fauci’s longtime congressional critic, Sen Rand Paul, who has repeatedly challenged Fauci over his handling of the pandemic.
Paul argued that the creation of the fund demonstrates the seriousness of Fauci’s legal situation and accused him of facing consequences for his past conduct.
For years we were told Fauci was the infallible expert who never made a mistake and never lied. Now his lawyers are admitting the legal exposure is so large they need a special fund to handle it.

You can’t fundraise the truth away. https://t.co/ZQaOSHIbzJ
“For years we were told Fauci was the infallible expert who never made a mistake and never lied,” Paul wrote. “You can’t fundraise the truth away.”
Fauci has not been charged with a crime.
However, the Senate previously voted to hold him in contempt after he declined to answer questions concerning documents and his pandemic-era records, sending a criminal referral to federal prosecutors.
Investigations keep pressure mounting
The scrutiny extends beyond Capitol Hill.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has subpoenaed Fauci as part of a state investigation into whether he personally benefited from COVID-19 guidance issued during the pandemic.
Fauci’s handling of research funding and the origins of COVID-19 has also remained politically contentious. His communications and diary entries obtained by senators have fueled renewed questions from his critics about what he knew about the virus and when he knew it.
Fauci, who led NIAID from 1984 until his retirement in 2022, has a presidential pardon covering conduct between January 1, 2014, and January 19, 2025. His lawyers maintain that the current legal actions amount to harassment and are preparing to fight them.
The defense fund does not establish wrongdoing or mean Fauci has been criminally charged.
It does, however, mark a new stage in the legal battle surrounding one of the most recognizable figures of the COVID-19 era.
