WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump’s never shy about taking credit, and this time, he’s calling attention to what he says is record-breaking support from gay voters, the kind of thing you don’t usually hear from a Republican. He managed to turn a joke about his dance moves into a statement about how wide his support stretches.

While talking about his signature routine, dancing to the Village People’s ‘YMCA’, which he called the “gay national anthem," the president admitted first lady Melania Trump isn’t a fan. She apparently thinks his moves look anything but presidential. But Trump said he doesn’t mind, claiming he’ll keep dancing as long as it wins him this so-called historic support from the gay community.

Trump touts support from gay voters

“She hates when I dance to that great, to the gay national anthem,” Trump said, recalling a conversation with Melania about his dancing at a rally in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Friday, August 21.

Trump joked about the first lady criticizing his dance moves, calling them “so unpresidential.” He shrugged it off and said he reminded her of his election win. Then he switched gears and started talking about support from gay voters, claiming he got the highest percentage any Republican has ever received.

“I said, ‘Darling, I won in a landslide. It’s OK,’” Trump said.

“You know, I got the highest gay vote in the history of politics for a Republican,” Trump remarked, connecting the claim to his decision to play 'YMCA', adding, “I’ll take it.”

The president has frequently used 'YMCA' at political events, where his dance moves to the song have become a recognizable part of his public appearances.

His latest comments put the focus less on the song itself and more on his assertion that his support among gay voters reached a historic level for a Republican.

Trump blasts Biden-era policies on transgender issues

Trump didn’t miss the chance to go after former President Joe Biden either. He claimed Biden’s policies on transgender issues and sports go against what most voters want.

“This Biden didn't know what the hell he was doing,” Trump said, before criticizing policies related to transgender children and participation in women's sports.

“They gave us the transgender mutilization of your children,” Trump said. “They gave us men playing in women's sports. It doesn't work.”

Later, Trump circled back to mention his dancing and his backing from gay voters. He argued that his win proves his message connects with people outside the usual Republican base.
