Melania's cufflinks hid the presidential seal in plain sight while Dior skirt stole the spotlight
WASHINGTON, DC: First lady Melania Trump returned to the White House Rose Garden on Thursday, August 20, in a patriotic red, white, and blue look, but it was a tiny accessory that gave the outfit its most direct connection to the presidency.
Her stylist Herve Pierre confirmed that the cufflinks she wore featured the presidential seal.
The fashion description identifies them as “Presidential Seal in Red Enamel,” and Melania had swapped her usual crystal cufflinks for the design, making the choice a deliberate part of the outfit.

Melania Trump color-matched her presidential seal cufflinks to her red Dior skirt
The presidential seal features a bald eagle at the center, an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left, along with a shield on its chest and 13 stars above it.
The words “SEAL OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES” surround the emblem.
For the first lady’s look, the seal appeared in red enamel — a small detail that tied directly into the brightest elements of her outfit.
Her red Dior pencil skirt and matching red Manolo Blahnik pumps gave the look a strong patriotic feel against the wall of American flags behind her.
The pale blue Michael Kors shirt added contrast while keeping the overall outfit polished and coordinated.
Melania Trump has used fashion to reference history and presidential power
This is not the first time Melania has used fashion to add meaning to a major political appearance.
Her earlier looks have relied on color, silhouette, and historical references.
For President Donald Trump's first presidential inauguration in 2017, Melania chose a powder blue Ralph Lauren outfit, drawing comparisons to former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy.
Melania wore an ivory Christian Dior pantsuit to Trump’s State of the Union address on January 30, 2018, invoking speculation about a symbolic connection to the women's suffrage movement.
At the 2020 Republican National Convention, she chose an army-green, military-inspired Alexander McQueen skirt suit for her speech.
For the 2025 presidential inauguration, she wore an all-American ensemble consisting of a sharply tailored, double-breasted dark navy silk-wool coat and matching pencil skirt by Adam Lippes, paired with a wide-brimmed boater hat by Eric Javits.
Melania Trump’s Rose Garden return had a playful start
The outfit was only part of what made Melania’s return to the Rose Garden memorable.
As she took the podium, she greeted the crowd with a playful five-word message.
“I heard you missed me. Here I am,” Melania said, prompting laughter from the audience, including President Trump.
She stood before a wall of American flags while an IndyCar decorated in red, white, and blue sat nearby. The car was part of an event tied to her Fostering the Future initiative, which was being expanded to 26 colleges and universities.
Melania also gave the race car her own review.
“Look at this incredible race car,” she said. “Gorgeous and powerful.”
