Fetterman breaks with Democrats' Fauci defense but says GOP went too far 'pounding' 85-year-old doctor

WASHINGTON, DC: Sen. John Fetterman broke with many Democrats during a heated Senate hearing on COVID-19 by agreeing that Dr. Anthony Fauci should face accountability and saying the lab-leak theory deserves serious consideration, while also criticizing Republicans over their treatment of Fauci.

Fetterman, who sits on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said the lab-leak theory, once dismissed by many on the left as a fringe idea, now appears to be an emerging explanation. During the hearing, he told Fauci directly, "I'm not here to, perhaps, attack you, or defend, or anything."

Fetterman criticizes GOP questioning of Fauci during hearing

Fetterman told NewsNation in a July 29 interview after the hearing that the questioning of the 85-year-old former public health official had gone too far.

"I don't think it's really appropriate to pound an 85-year-old man … just to try to humiliate the guy," Fetterman said, adding, "It was excessive."

Fauci appeared under subpoena and repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, declining to answer questions from Committee Chairman Rand Paul about federal funding tied to the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the broader debate over whether the coronavirus originated from an animal source or a laboratory.

While other Democrats on the panel more strongly defended Fauci as Republicans questioned his handling of the pandemic, Fetterman offered a more reflective view based on his own experience.

As Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor during the pandemic, he said he was "in the middle of all of that maelstrom, trying to find the right balance between protect life and protect the economics."

He added, "I'm not sure if we got it all right or wrong but without a doubt I can continue to question myself."

Fetterman's position is tied to his own record. As Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor during the pandemic, he had firsthand exposure to the difficult decisions officials faced while balancing public health concerns and economic impacts.

Fetterman's political brand in the swing state has increasingly relied on being unpredictable in both directions, agreeing with Republicans on some issues while continuing to caucus with Democrats.

Fetterman calls COVID lab-leak theory an emerging explanation

Fetterman also used the hearing to weigh in on the origins debate itself, noting how politically charged the question had become over time.

"Early on that became like a right-wing kind of theory, and I thought it seemed to make sense," he said of the lab-leak hypothesis, adding, "It seems now it's more and more emerging theory that it would have come from the lab."

His comments came as intelligence agencies continued examining the origins of COVID-19. The CIA previously assessed that a lab origin was "more likely," while noting it had only "low confidence" in that conclusion.

Fetterman's remarks reinforced his image as a Democrat who does not always follow the party line. While Republicans have frequently highlighted his breaks from Democrats, he has continued working within the Democratic caucus.

By agreeing with Republicans on the need for Fauci accountability and giving more consideration to the lab-leak theory, while criticizing the tone of the hearing, Fetterman positioned himself separately from both sides of the debate.

His comments added another layer to the ongoing dispute over Fauci's testimony, COVID-19 origins and how lawmakers should address pandemic-era decisions.
