‘I'll buy you the plane ticket’: Vance smacks down Mexican flag protester as crowd erupts
DALLAS, TEXAS: Vice President JD Vance confronted a protester waving a Mexican flag during his address at the first-ever Republican midterm convention in Dallas on Thursday, September 10, breaking from his prepared remarks to respond to the interruption.
The protester, who was also carrying a Palestinian flag, interrupted Vance from the convention floor and caught the vice president's attention as he delivered his speech to thousands of GOP voters. Vance responded as security escorted the man from the arena, prompting the crowd to erupt into chants of "USA! USA! USA!"

The protester appeared in the crowd while Vance was delivering his keynote address and drew the vice president's attention by waving the Mexican and Palestinian flags. The incident was not shown on the convention's official television feed, but Vance immediately described what had happened to viewers watching the speech.

"What the people at home missed is that we just had a protester interrupting us and waving the Mexican flag," Vance said, as the crowd booed. "Well, my friend, if you love Mexico so much, get over there. I'll buy you the plane ticket." As security began to move the protester out of the arena, the crowd began chanting "USA! USA! USA!"
Vance then acknowledged that the interruption had changed the direction of his remarks. "Ladies and gentlemen, I had a whole speech written," the vice president said. "But I think I gotta change it because we just discovered the symbol of the far left: an idiot waving … a Mexican flag at a protest when he should be waving the flag of the United States of America.”

Vance continued that the protester, despite displaying a foreign flag, would still rather live in an American city. "As much as that person might wave around a foreign flag, he'd much rather live in Dallas or in Cincinnati, or in any one of our great cities than Mexico," Vance said.
He used the moment to return to his broader argument about the American economy and national identity, saying the benefits of living in the United States should not be taken for granted. "But while we wave the American flag and fight for the American dream, we have to remind ourselves tonight that the good life that is the foundation of this country's promise is not guaranteed," he said.
Vance turns protest into attack on Democrats
The vice president then shifted his focus to Democratic candidates in the upcoming midterm elections. He accused Democrats of seeking to control how Americans live and what they say, while arguing that Republicans were defending the country's "birthright."
VP Vance: "The Democrats are running candidates who will tell your children what they’re allowed to say, how they’re allowed to live, and, importantly, who they ought to hate. Because that’s what the Democrat Party is about in 2026. It’s not about you. It’s about who they hate.… pic.twitter.com/192AgE7ZWx

The interruption was the first reported instance during the two-day convention in which a protester managed to interrupt a speaker from inside the American Airlines Center. After Vance left the stage, Lee Greenwood performed 'God Bless the USA' before President Donald Trump took the stage for the convention's closing address.
