Trump Jr aligns with Vance after GOP midterm rout as he eyes political future beyond his father

WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump Jr didn’t waste any time making his support for Vice President JD Vance public after Republicans took a beating in the 2026 midterms. He echoed Vance’s claim that the war with Iran was the main reason for the GOP’s big loss, jumping in with a strong endorsement on X (formerly Twitter) right after Vance posted his long explanation.

The timing got people talking. Then journalist Rob Shuter, writing on his 'Naughty But Nice' Substack, suggested Trump Jr might have something else in mind too. Citing a Republican insider, Shuter reported Trump Jr could be positioning himself closer to Vance as Republicans start to look ahead to 2028.

Vance addressed the Republican defeat in a lengthy post on X on Wednesday, November 4, arguing that the party needed to acknowledge why voters had turned against it.

He admitted that some people who backed the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 grew frustrated with the administration and ended up voting for Democrats. Vance told fellow Republicans they need to pay attention to those concerns instead of just brushing off the election results.

His post signaled that he is looking ahead to 2028 and the next presidential election.

The next morning, Trump Jr publicly agreed with the vice president, writing, "Every word of this is [hundred points emoji]." His support got people talking, since many saw Vance's comments as stepping away from President Donald Trump's ongoing defense of the Iran war.

According to Shuter's report on his 'Naughty But Nice' Substack, the response may have been a strategic move.

"JD Vance is the future [Trump Jr] wants to be standing next to," a Republican insider told Shuter. "This is about positioning himself for what comes next."

Insider claims Donald Trump Jr wants a place alongside JD Vance in 2028

If Vance were to become the Republican nominee, he would need a running mate, and "Don wants to be on that ticket," the insider claimed.

"He isn't just agreeing with JD; he's making sure Vance sees him as an ally," the insider added. "He's distancing himself from his father without giving up the political value of the Trump name."

The source also suggested Trump Jr was trying to establish himself as an ally of Vance while retaining the political influence associated with his father's name.

Shuter's insider further said, "Junior knows the political winds are changing. His father is becoming a liability."

Vance shared a video of the president reacting to his lengthy X post when asked about it by reporters.

"I know how he feels about it. I think it was fine. I thought it was good," Trump said.

Shuter's report described the move as a possible attempt to prepare for a political landscape beyond Trump's presidency. However, neither Trump Jr nor Vance publicly announced any plans involving a future presidential ticket.
