WASHINGTON, DC: First Lady Jill Biden and multi-platinum singer Christina Aguilera have teamed up to advocate for abortion rights in the upcoming elections.

In a social media message, the duo addressed the trend of state-level abortion bans that have swept across the nation following the 2022 Supreme Court decision, which stripped away constitutional protections for abortion.

Addressing the impact of state-level abortion bans

"It was shocking and devastating. From state to state, abortion bans went into effect, threatening the health and lives of women across the country," remarked Biden, voicing concern over the implications of these bans.

Aguilera echoed Biden's sentiments, highlighting the repercussions faced by healthcare providers. "While also threatening doctors with prosecution for simply doing their jobs," Aguilera emphasized.

The conversation didn't stop there. Biden raised another issue, stating, "And now, extremists are even threatening the right to access IVF and contraception for so many families."

With more than one in three American women of reproductive age currently living under an abortion ban, Biden and Aguilera sounded the alarm about the potential ramifications of a federal abortion ban.

“Secrecy, shame, punishment, danger, even death,” the first lady said. “Extremists are working harder than ever to drag us back to a past we thought was long over.”

Aguilera passionately argued for autonomy in reproductive healthcare decisions, asserting that these decisions should be made by individuals and their doctors, not politicians. "I will not let my daughter live in a world where politicians make decisions about her body," she declared.

As the Biden-Harris reelection campaign gears up to face former President Trump in November, the message couldn't be clearer. "This November, our reproductive rights will be on the ballot in all 50 states. Together, we need to stop a national abortion ban," emphasized Jill Biden in the video.

In addition to raising awareness, Biden and Aguilera provided resources for individuals to check their voter registration and get involved in efforts to protect women's rights, The Hill reported.

Social media reactions

However, their advocacy didn't go unchallenged, as social media was flooded with reactions.

"This is not a win lol," one posted on X.

"Oh, she found her 'breakfast taco'," another quipped.

"If this was 2004 I'd be impressed," someone else chimed in.

"Roe was overturned 2 years ago, and Biden hasn’t tried to [do] s*** about until now? Why is that? Ohhh wait, it’s an election year.. lol," another wrote.

'Women for Biden-Harris' initiative

Last month, President Biden's campaign launched 'Women for Biden-Harris', a nationwide initiative led by Jill Biden to mobilize female voters. With women playing a pivotal role in Biden's 2020 victory, the campaign aims to harness their collective power once again.

“Women put Joe in the White House four years ago, and women will do it again,” the FLOTUS said in a statement. “In our communities, women are the organizers, the planners, the mobilizers. We get things done. That’s exactly why we’re launching ‘Women for Biden’ now because when women organize, we win.”

Former President Trump's shadow looms large over the upcoming elections, with his staunch opposition to abortion rights serving as a rallying cry for his supporters. However, Democrats remain undeterred, determined to make reproductive rights and access to women's healthcare central issues in this year's campaign.

Biden’s campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said the stakes for women in this election “could not be higher."

“Americans will face a real choice at the ballot box this November between Joe and Kamala who will stand up and fight for women and their freedoms each and every day, and Donald Trump who is looking to take our rights and freedoms away,” Rodriguez said in a statement. “Republicans have underestimated the power of women time after time and together, this November, we will make sure that they never make that mistake again.”
