NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former republican George Conway has  announced on Tuesday, January 6 that he is running as a Democrat in New York's 12th congressional district.

The 62-year-old lawyer spoke to CNN about his congressional bid and said that he only had one goal in mind, which was to take down President Donald Trump.

Conway criticized Trump, calling him “criminal,” and said that he was committing high crimes and misdemeanors, which were in violation of the presidential oath.

Conway calls on people to support him to defend rule of law

George Conway took to X to share a campaign video, targeting Donald Trump. In it, he urged democratic fighters to join him to “defend the rule of law.”

“We have a dem*nted, criminal president running the country like a mob operation — government by the boss, for the boss,” he wrote.

The video, which was ironically posted on January 6, featured clips of the 2021 Capitol attack on January 6. A former Republican, Conway left the GOP in protest during Trump’s first term.

As clips of Trump addressing a group of protestors played in the background, Conway said that people saw it, heard it, read about it, and felt it. However, it was hard to believe, despite it being real.

“It’s happening on the streets of New York City every day,” he said as a clip showed a woman being taken away by ICE agents.

He said that just when people thought it couldn’t get worse, it does, and noted that it needed to stop.

“We must make it stop,” he added.

Conway accuses Trump of breaking international law

He further criticized President Trump and described him as “mendacious,” whose “masked agents” - referring to ICE officials, were making people disappear from the streets. He further accused Trump of breaking international law as a clip of the September 2025 boat strike came up.

“He’s running our federal government like a mob protection racket,”  he said.

Conway assured the people that he knew how to fight corrupt and amoral people. He alleged that people like Donald Trump and his allies would stop at nothing to rig the system to work in their favor.

Conway stated that he had been fighting Donald Trump for years and would continue to do so. He added that he was a former Republican and as a Democrat, fought the president publicly in every way he could.

However, he added that he would never regret standing up to the President. Conway also commented on Trump calling the affordability crisis a “hoax,” stating that while it may be great for the president, everyone else was struggling to make ends meet. He added that prices were skyrocketing and millions were losing coverage.
