WASHINGTON, DC: Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi sharply criticized the Supreme Court On Monday, July 1, claiming it had "gone rogue" by granting presidential immunity for official acts taken while in office.

Pelosi argued that this decision undermines the core American principle that no one is above the law.

Pelosi has meltdown over Supreme Court ruling

“Today, the Supreme Court has gone rogue with its decision, violating the foundational American principle that no one is above the law,” Pelosi stated.

“The former president’s claim of total presidential immunity is an insult to the vision of our founders, who declared independence from a King.”

Pelosi insisted that the Supreme Court itself is now on trial with this decision. “The Supreme Court placed itself on trial with this decision – and its credibility has been further diminished in the eyes of all those who believe in the rule of law,” she added.

The Supreme Court's ruling on Monday declared that core presidential powers are immune from criminal prosecution, a huge win for former President Trump. The decision sends his federal election interference case back to a lower court to determine whether his actions to overturn the 2020 election are protected under this immunity.

It's worth noting that the ruling did not grant Trump the total immunity he sought. However, it does make it less likely that the case will go to trial before the November 2024 presidential election.

Pelosi specifically railed against a part of the court’s ruling that deemed official acts inadmissible in trials for unofficial acts.

She labeled this as a “seriously dangerous aspect of the ruling.” Pelosi also criticized the court's delay, stating, “With its delay, the Republican-appointed 6-3 Court gave the defendant a political gift.”

Democrats fume over Supreme Court ruling

Other Democrats shared Pelosi’s outrage over the decision. Representative Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) described the ruling as a “travesty” and potentially the most dangerous judicial opinion from the Supreme Court in generations.

“By smooth and naive legalese, these partisan justices have created a framework for a President to commit any acts he or she chooses … This opinion is nothing less than a blueprint for a lawless dictator to take root in the Oval Office of the White House,” Pascrell declared in a statement.

Rep Dan Goldman (D-NY), a former federal prosecutor, echoed these sentiments, calling it a dark day for American democracy.

“The Supreme Court’s ruling gives expansive immunity to a corrupt president who purports to use acts within his official authority to conspire to overturn a lawful election,” Goldman said.

Goldman accused conservative justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito of failing to recuse themselves from the case due to their connections to Trump. Thomas’s wife was reportedly a leading figure in the “Stop the Steal” movement, while Alito's wife was involved in flying flags related to the campaign outside their homes, according to The Hill.

Goldman stated, “This ruling is perhaps the final nail in the coffin of this rogue Supreme Court’s claim to institutional legitimacy.”

The decision significantly affects special counsel Jack Smith’s indictment of Trump, determining that various actions Trump took to remain in power after losing the election are indeed protected.

Republicans rejoice after Supreme Court ruling

Trump and his Republican allies argue that he is a victim of a "weaponized" Department of Justice (DOJ) under President Biden.

Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chair of the House Judiciary Committee, commented, “Hyper-partisan prosecutors like Jack Smith cannot weaponize the rule of law to go after the Administration’s chief political rival, and we hope the Left will stop its attacks on President Trump and uphold democratic norms.”

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) called the ruling a “defeat” for Biden’s “weaponized” DOJ, saying it is based on the unique power and position of the presidency and aligns with the Constitution and common sense.

“As President Trump has repeatedly said, the American people, not President Biden’s bureaucrats, will decide the November 5th election,” Johnson stated.

The case now returns to district court, where proceedings had been paused while the Supreme Court considered Trump’s immunity claims. Judge Tanya Chutkan will now reexamine the issue along with other pending efforts by Trump to dismiss the case.

Nancy Pelosi excoriated on social media

Pelosi faced quite a backlash on social media following her accusations against the Supreme Court.

"Just tell us what stocks to buy Nancy," one posted on X.

"Would you agree with removing immunity from insider trading for Congress?" another asked.

"Today the Supreme Court did what was right. Have you already started to drink today, Nancy?" someone else quipped.

"Since I know your drunk ass can’t focus right now have one of your interns read the decision to you. It doesn’t say total immunity you worthless hack!!" a comment read.

"You should be in jail," another insisted.
