Trey Gowdy slammed as he calls Biden 'worthy debater' and warns conservatives against underestimating POTUS
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: During an appearance on June 21 'Special Report' on Fox News with guest host Shannon Bream, weekend host Trey Gowdy joined the chorus of conservatives expressing concern that Republicans have set low expectations for President Joe Biden ahead of his upcoming debate with Donald Trump.
Previously, Trump and other Republicans frequently characterized Biden as senile or @investigating his possession of classified documents as per AP News.
Fox’s Trey Gowdy discusses GOP concerns over Joe Biden’s debate expectations
When Biden surpassed these expectations, such as during his State of the Union address, some on the right speculated that he might have used performance-enhancing drugs.
Trump even suggested Biden might use cocaine before their debate.
However, Trump has recently shifted his stance. During a podcast on June 20, the former president praised Biden's performance in the 2012 vice presidential debate, stating that Biden "destroyed" Paul Ryan.
"So, I'm not underestimating him," Gowdy remarked. "I assume he's going to be somebody that will be a worthy debater."
CNN's Maggie Haberman also reported that Trump's campaign is worried they have set the bar too low for Biden.
Gowdy addressed these concerns about Biden's debate expectations.
“Let’s start with the debate exceptions,” Bream began. “Are Republicans in trouble because they’ve spent a lot of time in recent weeks talking about how President Biden can’t find his way off the stage? And we saw what happened in the State of the Union when he came in stronger than expected. And there was a ton of praise for him.”
“Yeah, they’ve got to be very careful,” Gowdy replied. “I don’t know why Republicans fall into this trap of setting high exceptions.” (Presumably, Gowdy meant to say “setting low expectations” for Biden).
He further commented that the debate would be "fascinating because it's a combination of agenda and acuity."
“It’s content and cognition,” he added. “So, the viewers will be watching both – not only what you say, but are you fit for office? So, I don’t recall a debate in my lifetime where both of those issues were front and center for both of the candidates.”
When is Trump-Biden debate?
Reportedly, the first debate, hosted by CNN at its Atlanta studios, is set for June 27, with a second debate scheduled by ABC News on Sept. 10.
This schedule marks an earlier timing than traditional presidential debates, usually held in late September and October.
However, Mr. Biden’s team prefers this timing to conclude debates before early voting begins.
They argue that earlier debates will enable voters to assess the candidates before casting early ballots and allow nominees to concentrate on campaigning in the final weeks of the election.
As the CNN debate approaches, the terms are now finalized (as per The Washington Post):
- The debate will proceed without an audience, fulfilling a request from Mr. Biden's team to avoid disruptions from in-person reactions.
- Scheduled to begin at 9 pm Eastern time, the debate will last 90 minutes with two commercial breaks.
- Microphones will be muted when not in use by the respective candidate, addressing another stipulation from the Biden campaign.
- Only Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden will participate on stage; independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who polled in the teens, did not qualify.
- Both candidates will stand at podiums, with Mr. Biden positioned on the right and Mr. Trump on the left as viewed by the audience, determined by a coin toss won by Mr. Biden.
- Mr. Trump will have the final opportunity to speak during closing statements, also determined by the coin toss.
- Jake Tapper and Dana Bash will serve as moderators for the CNN debate.
Details for the ABC News debate are more limited, but it was announced that David Muir and Linsey Davis will moderate.
