Race Against Time: Dramatic photos as first person rescued from flooded Laos cave, 4 remain trapped

After more than a week underground, rescuers located five of the trapped miners alive on a rocky ledge around 300 meters from the cave entrance. After spending hours navigating the claustrophobic, muddy, water-filled cave, the specialist divers managed to locate the five miners. The men on the rock had torn clothes and dirty faces, seemingly stunned that they had been found alive. One told the camera, 'Don’t worry about me, Mum. The rescuers are here. I’m safe now.'

Thai rescue diver Norrased Palasing told NBC News that getting the men out of the cave would not be easy, given the complex and dangerous conditions inside. Even before the flooding caused by monsoon rains, it was nearly impossible to enter or exit the cave, diving experts said. Lead rescue diver Mikko Paasi noted that the tunnel was about the width of a hubcap in some sections. He explained that the rescue operation was extremely dangerous, as the fear of suffocation often triggers panic. In such situations, trapped individuals may instinctively grab or cling to their rescuers, potentially endangering both parties or causing a blockage in the narrow passageways.

Rescue Volunteer for People announced on social media that one of the miners, who was not named, was brought out safely after a perilous two-hour operation. Paasi said the operation was even more challenging for the divers, as they carried five oxygen tanks and an extra breathing device, known as a regulator, for the miner. He was essentially tethered to them. The diving portion of the rescue took about ten minutes, Paasi said, adding that he and his fellow rescuers 'sandwiched' the rescued miner between them through the partially submerged cave. 'It's not a nice place to dive,' he continued. 'The guy was super strong, and props to him for that.'

The miner had never scuba dived before and was forced to navigate murky, near-zero-visibility waters that would challenge even elite divers. Paasi said there was no opportunity for proper training, describing the perilous rescue as a 'trust-me dive' in which the miner had to place his life entirely in the hands of his rescuers. 'I got him through the restrictions and everything, and he's healthy, and he's alive,' Paasi said. He added that the scuba diving rescue was considered only as a last resort because it put both the miners and the rescue divers at 'quite high risk.' The cave’s muddy, low-visibility waters, combined with a maze of dead ends and razor-sharp rock formations, created an extremely hazardous environment where even a moment of panic or hesitation could prove deadly.

Considering the darkness a major hurdle, rescue efforts were halted Friday night and are planned to resume Saturday morning. Paasi said new rescue personnel are on scene, along with extra equipment. 'We need to make a plan,' Paasi said. 'How do we make everything as efficient as we can? Now we know it can be done, and it can be improved for the safety of the guys and the rescue teams as well.'

The rescue teams spent hours crawling, swimming and diving through claustrophobic tunnels where visibility was almost nonexistent. Divers compared the murky water to 'diving in coffee,' with thick mud making navigation extremely difficult even for experienced professionals. Paasi said rescuers have suspended the search for the two missing miners, believing they either did not survive or are trapped in sections of the cave system too narrow and inaccessible for divers to reach. The team requested the Laotian government for immunity from charges if someone dies during the rescue mission.

In June 2018, twelve boys from a youth soccer team and their coach became trapped inside Thailand’s Tham Luang cave after monsoon rains flooded the underground passages. The group survived for more than two weeks before British divers located them. A massive international rescue effort followed, with expert cave divers guiding the boys and their coach through the flooded cave system. All thirteen were rescued safely in a mission that captivated the world.

A team of Thai divers who assisted in the rescue of a young Thai football team have joined the efforts to save the miners. Rescue teams used similar techniques to guide frightened, exhausted miners through pitch-black, submerged tunnels where visibility was nearly nonexistent. The operation has once again highlighted the extreme dangers of cave rescues and the extraordinary coordination required among international divers, local authorities, and emergency crews to save lives in some of the world’s most hazardous underground environments.
