Race Against Time: Dramatic photos as first person rescued from flooded Laos cave, 4 remain trapped
XAISOMBOUN, LAOS: The tense silence around a deep cave in central Xaisomboun shattered into relief when a weak, disheveled man, covered head to toe in mud, crawled out of a narrow crevice. A crowd greeted him as he struggled to walk and had to be assisted by two rescue workers before being rushed for a medical check. This was the first extrication from the cave since divers found the five men trapped alive on Wednesday, May 26. Seven people are believed to have entered the labyrinthine cave system in Laos’ Xaisomboun Province on May 19 in search of gold, only to become trapped after heavy rains and flash flooding sealed the cave’s entrance. Specialist divers have managed to locate five of the men huddled together on a rock, but two remain missing.
