Build it, burn it, abandon it: How Burning Man builds a city for 70,000 then makes it disappear without a trace

Before the camps, art cars and crowds arrive, Black Rock Playa presents an almost otherworldly sight. Seen from above, the scale of the transformation becomes clear. Satellite photographs of Burning Man 2026 show Black Rock City's famous clock-like layout carved into the playa, with curved streets intersected by radial roads stretching toward its center.

Once the gates open, the empty streets quickly fill. Around 70,000 attendees were expected at the 2026 gathering, effectively creating one of Nevada's larger population centers for a matter of days. Black Rock City has far more than tents. The temporary metropolis includes emergency services, roads, public spaces, an airport and hundreds of organized camps.

As Black Rock City reaches full strength, the empty spaces between its streets become populated by surreal installations. Burning Man's open playa effectively becomes a gigantic outdoor gallery, with participants traveling between sculptures and interactive works by bicycle or aboard elaborate "mutant vehicles."

At the geographic center of the temporary city is the structure that gives Burning Man its name. For 2026, the Man stood above a pavilion called 'Cryptomeria,' designed by Alexander Rose and inspired by Japan's ancient Jōmon Sugi cedar tree. Root-like pathways led toward the structure, while a double spiral staircase rose through the pavilion

Leaving Black Rock City is not as simple as packing up the tents. One of Burning Man's central principles is "Leave No Trace," meaning participants are expected to remove what they brought and avoid leaving debris behind. After most Burners depart, cleanup teams continue combing the playa for what the community calls MOOP (Matter Out of Place). The Bureau of Land Management, which oversees the federal land where the gathering takes place, monitors the cleanup. Eventually the roads fade, the camps disappear and the elaborate temporary infrastructure is removed.
