Photos show NYC skyline disappear behind Canadian wildfire smoke ahead of World Cup Final
New York City and much of the surrounding metropolitan area woke up under hazy, smoke-filled skies as drifting wildfire smoke from Canada spread across the Northeast just days before the FIFA World Cup final, creating an unsettling backdrop for one of the biggest sporting weekends of the year. The smoke originated from hundreds of active wildfires burning across several Canadian provinces. High-altitude winds carried fine particulate matter hundreds of miles into the northeastern United States, causing air-quality levels to fluctuate throughout the day.
