Heartbreaking scenes unfold at Bite of Seattle vigil as community mourns 3 killed in mass shooting

The shooting broke out outside the Seattle Center Armory as thousands of people attended the final day of the three-day Bite of Seattle festival. Police say at least two—and now believe possibly three—people exchanged gunfire in the crowded venue, sending families scrambling for cover. Seven people were struck by gunfire. Three died: Carlos Israel Sanchez Villalba, 44, Ashley Whitehead, 56, and Junior Cee Niko Semo, 19, who authorities later identified as one of the suspected shooters. Four others—including a 2-year-old boy—were hospitalized. Police arrested a 15-year-old suspect, while investigators continue searching for at least one additional suspect.

As darkness settled over Seattle Center, the mood shifted from speeches to silent remembrance. Hundreds of cellphone flashlights and candles illuminated the crowd while rows of memorial candles lined the pavement near the International Fountain. Families stood arm in arm, many wearing orange tribute shirts honoring the victims.

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson addressed the crowd with a handheld megaphone, surrounded by community members wearing bright orange memorial shirts bearing a portrait of one of the victims. Turning toward grieving father and anti-gun violence advocate Arron Murphy-Paine, Wilson declared, "This is not acceptable. ... No father, no parent should have to bury their child." She continued, "This is not something we can keep letting happen in our community... I'm here right now to express commitment, to express solidarity, to say that I stand with you." Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes also attended the vigil, standing alongside residents and promising the department would continue pursuing everyone responsible.

Arron Murphy-Paine and his wife Lakisha Murphy-Paine, who lost their son Amarr Murphy-Paine in gun violence outside Seattle's Garfield High School in 2024 also joined the vigil. Addressing the crowd, Murphy-Paine expressed sympathy for the families now beginning a journey he knows all too well. "I just want to give condolences to all the victims of gun violence that this city has experienced," he said. "I want to give condolences to the families that lost lives yesterday... They weren't doing anything that would cost them their lives but enjoying the Bite of Seattle." His words resonated throughout the gathering, where many attendees embraced one another while holding candles and photographs.

Among those remembered was Ashley Whitehead, 56, who was struck while attending the festival as an innocent bystander. Whitehead had recently moved to Washington and was waiting in line for cotton candy when the gunfire erupted. She later died during surgery after being rushed to Harborview Medical Center. At the vigil, her cousin, Michelle, broke down in tears as she carried handmade signs calling for an end to gun violence.
