Storm chaser dramatically rescues elderly man trapped in rubble as massive tornados rip through Illinois

A group of storm chasers documenting a violent tornado outbreak across Illinois became unlikely heroes when they helped rescue an elderly man trapped beneath the wreckage of his home after powerful tornadoes tore through Streator, Illinois. His wife was heard screaming for help, unable to pull her husband from the rubble. The dramatic rescue unfolded as multiple large tornadoes swept across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, leaving a trail of destroyed homes, damaged buildings, and downed power lines.

The storm trackers heard calls for help coming from beneath a collapsed structure. Realizing someone was trapped, they immediately rushed to the debris and began searching for the source of the voice. The elderly man was pinned beneath the rubble after the tornado tore apart his home. After several tense minutes, rescuers were able to reach him and carefully pull him from the wreckage. The rescue occurred during a severe weather outbreak that prompted rare Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) tornado warnings and at least one Tornado Emergency, among the most serious alerts issued by the National Weather Service.

The American Red Cross opened shelters for displaced residents, including a facility capable of accommodating up to 700 people. Emergency declarations were also being prepared in affected communities to help secure recovery funding and assistance.
