Trump’s Ireland golf club visit required extraordinary security detail, including Chinooks and armored buggy

The scale of the security operation was apparent even before Trump arrived at the course. A sniper was photographed in an open field at Trump International Golf Links. The striking scene showed how security teams were monitoring the sprawling grounds and surrounding countryside ahead of the president’s arrival.

Trump arrived at the resort shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday after traveling from Dublin, where he had held official meetings. Play at the Irish Open was briefly suspended for the presidential landing.

Marine One wasn't alone. Two large US Army Chinooks accompanied the presidential arrival, with photographs capturing the military aircraft parked beside Marine One on the grass.

The Chinooks had been seen conducting practice approaches over west Clare in the days leading up to Trump's arrival. A fortified helipad was constructed near the course to accommodate the presidential operation.

The unusual scenes unfolded while some of the world’s top golfers were trying to complete the Irish Open. Shane Lowry and his caddie were captured looking toward an approaching presidential helicopter. Lowry later called it an “insane day” after Trump’s arrival temporarily interrupted play. He ultimately had little trouble maintaining his focus, winning the tournament by a record 11 shots before Trump presented him with the trophy.

Security remained just as conspicuous on the ground. The US presidential motorcade dramatically snaked through the dunes, with spectators lining the route on both sides. Trump’s visit brought road closures and hundreds of police officers to the small County Clare community.

Trump’s movements around the resort were also heavily protected. Reports described an armored, bulletproof golf buggy stationed near the president’s private viewing area at the 18th green.

The presidential security perimeter extended beyond the course itself. Officers on quad bikes were spotted on the beach adjoining the resort.
