LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: California’s first couple, Governor Gavin Newsom and his wife Jennifer Siebel, definitely know how to mix Hollywood glam with political muscle.

He runs the state; she makes documentaries. Together, they’re living large enough to make Silicon Valley blush.

But lately, their lavish lifestyle has raised a few eyebrows. Flaunting wealth in California isn’t exactly shocking, but the optics are starting to look a little too luxe for two public servants.

Newsom and Jennifer Siebel face scrutiny over salaries, donations, and luxury lifestyle

According to sources, Jennifer Siebel Newsom pocketed up to $150,000 through her nonprofit, The Representation Project. As the organization’s founder, she reportedly awarded herself that salary.

But the real eyebrow-raiser came when the nonprofit’s largest donation went straight to Siebel’s own company, Girls Club Entertainment. The check, for another $150,000, was marked for “writer/producer/director services,” per filings.

Meanwhile, the governor is no stranger to big money himself. In 2024, he earned about $240,000 from his day job, a position that comes with both a mansion and a security detail.

But that’s just the beginning. The real wealth reportedly comes from a range of businesses tucked inside his blind trust. According to The List, his portfolio includes restaurants, wineries, and other ventures he either founded or partnered in before entering politics.

According to the Associated Press, Newsom and Siebel raked in roughly $1.5 million in 2020 from their combined paychecks and business deals.

Newsom’s wealth and lifestyle clash with his ‘man of the people’ image

Gavin Newsom’s wealth may be as much a liability as it is a luxury. His privileged background has long shadowed his image as a man of the people, and critics argue that his transparency on finances doesn’t quite align with his public persona.

The Wall Street Journal even noted that Newsom’s outspoken opposition to a wealth tax doesn’t exactly convey solidarity with California’s struggling middle class. While the governor likes to brand himself as a champion of fairness, it’s difficult to do so while sipping vintage Cabernet from one of his own vineyards.

Jennifer Siebel Newsom isn’t new to the high life either. Before becoming the first lady of California, she was in front of the camera, appearing in 'Mad Men' and 'Rent.' When acting lost its appeal, she transitioned into directing and producing documentaries.

Newsom blames Trump for looming food crisis amid govt shutdown

This comes as Governor Gavin Newsom slammed Washington over a looming food benefits crisis.

“Trump’s failure to open the federal government is now endangering people’s lives and making basic needs like food more expensive, just as the holidays arrive,” Newsom said, warning that more than five million Californians relying on CalFresh (the state’s version of SNAP) could see their benefit cards run dry if the government didn’t reopen by Thursday.

Local agencies were already sounding the alarm. “We are preparing for thousands of additional households coming into our services,” said Genevieve Pyeatt, director of programs for the Yolo Food Bank.

The blame game erupted almost immediately. “From the beginning, our message has been very simple. We will not be extorted on this crazy plot of theirs," President Donald Trump fired back from the White House.

Republicans echoed the president’s stance. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R) said, “We are going to keep voting to open the government and eventually, the Democrats, hopefully sooner or later, will come around.”
