LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: California Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday,  August 14, issued a stark warning about what he described as US President Donald Trump’s efforts to manipulate the electoral system in his favor, potentially paving the way for a historic and unconstitutional third term.

Speaking at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, Newsom unveiled plans for a special statewide election on November 4 to decide whether California should adopt a mid-decade redistricting plan.

The proposal, Gavin Newsom said, was designed to safeguard California’s congressional representation as Republican-controlled states, including Texas, Florida, Ohio, Indiana, and Missouri, push through maps that could solidify GOP control in key districts before the 2026 midterms.

He accused Trump of using gerrymandering as part of a broader strategy to erode democratic norms and prolong his political grip on the country.

“Wake up, America, wake up,” Newsom urged. “You will not have a country if he rigs this election. You will have a president who will be running for a third term. Mark my words. I wasn’t exaggerating when I said that. I received in the mail a Trump 2028 hat from one of his biggest supporters.”

He added, “These guys are not screwing around. The rules do not apply to him. The most corrupt president in history doesn’t believe in free enterprise — it’s crony capitalism.”

Framing the special election as a direct response to what he labeled Trump’s “anti-American” tactics, Newsom alleged that the president and his allies were deliberately redrawing maps to insulate themselves from electoral consequences. He accused the president and his supporters of manipulating district boundaries to protect themselves from public dissent and maintain uncontested political power.

Donald Trump says he will ‘probably’ not seek presidency beyond second term

President Trump signaled that he is unlikely to run for a third term, telling CNBC’s Squawk Box that he would “probably” not seek the presidency again after completing his second term.

When asked directly whether he might challenge the constitutional two-term limit, Trump replied, “No. Probably not. I'd like to run. I have the best poll numbers I've ever had. You know why? Because people love the tariffs.”

The statement drew immediate pushback from co-host Joe Kernen, who clarified that Trump’s highest polling numbers were among Republicans, not the general electorate. Trump dismissed the correction, claiming there were “a lot of fake polls” circulating.

Trump’s remarks come after months of speculation fueled by his public hints about extending his time in office beyond the 22nd Amendment’s restrictions. Earlier this year, in a March interview with NBC News, he said, “A lot of people want me to do it,” adding that “there are methods which you could do it.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s warning that Donald Trump could attempt to run for a third term ignited a wave of mocking responses online.

One user quipped, “Should have worn your ‘Trump 2028’ hat…” while another added, “We did wake up, that’s why we voted for Trump.”

Several commenters dismissed Newsom’s concerns as political theater.

“These libs are so easy!” one wrote, while another remarked, “He’s just doing anything and everything possible to drum up support and look like a tough guy for his 2028 Presidential bid.”

Others suggested Trump was simply baiting the California governor, with one writing, “Newscum doesn’t know that Trump is trolling him!”

“Bro can't take a prank,” one user said.

Another claimed, “He is really trying to get as much free media exposure as possible with political theatrics.”
